There are advantages to doing this with ATT instead of Verizon.

1. After buying the phone in Walmart, you can pay off phone via ATT online chat. For Verizon you have to go to a store.
2. ATT activation fee can be voided instantly from the bill by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" when the bill arrives even if it's more than 3 days from activation which will mostly happen if you ship it to your house.

3. ATT version can be instantly unlocked using eSIM swap. It's YMMV but for most people it works if you follow the instructions below and do the transfer of the eSIM properly from iPhone to another phone.
4. Even if the eSIM swap does not work I have seen some getting the phone unlocked by chatting with CS once the phone is paid off. That also is YMMV

Sim swap instructions

1. There are two timelines for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. But as mentioned earlier that fee can be voided instantly by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" in the bill even after 3 days.

2. You can use SIM swap method method to unlock the device.

3. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the eSIM. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then transfer the eSIM to another unlocked phone. Make sure you are transferring the eSIM without making a new one so no ATT involvement. Reboot the other phone, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.

4. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ (in incognito mode) and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of iPhone nd submit an unlock request using a different email, phone number, name etc not associated with the ATT account.

5. Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.

6. ONLY CANCEL THE LINE AFTER YOU HAVE UNLOCKED THE PHONE. OTHERWISE, YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO UNLOCK IT ANYMORE.

Edit: Forgot to mention you will have to try the SIM swap roughly 24 hours after paying off the phone. The unlock portal syncs with the billing system every night or so.

Thank you for posting this deal! Is the following correct?

1. Order the iPhone 16 online to take part of this deal
2. Once phone is delivered, activate the phone and place a test call
3. Call Verizon or log into your Verizon account to pay off the phone and cancel your service within 3 days of activation
4. Receive the $500 walmart gift card
5. iPhone is unlocked after 60 days despite not paying for a Verizon plan at all

Thanks for letting me know about OSL people being at some Walmarts. If I mention this deal to extended family I'll mention that they should only go to stores that have the OSL people if they do it in store.

How can you actually tell which Walmarts have the OSL people? Do you call each individual store up and ask customer service or the manager if they have a OSL cell associate and if so, what are their hours? Or is there a locator map that I'm completely missing on the website link that you gave me?

Thanks for all of your help with this!

P.S. could anybody in the California region who bought the phone at Walmart.com please share what shipper delivered it? TYI!
Why don't you try to call your local Walmart's electronics dept and ask these questions? I called several nearby to find out about availability, etc.

Hi @gadgetNerd and team due to 4days time limit after account creation(may be i have not understood full terms) and no luck in device pay i closed the line without device payment. my first bill is 150 and around 1050 next month for device pay. I tried to ask CS to adjust first bill based on buyers remorse rule it did not worked out. do you know if it is final or alternatives. Thankyou!

I ordered an AT&T iPhone 16 Max from Walmart on the 17th, and I just received it today. When I opened the AT&T account, I noticed my phone number ended in 6873, but when I tried to activate the phone, it showed that the phone was actually linked to a Verizon account with the number ending in 6735. It asked for the Verizon account PIN to activate, but I don't know this PIN and it's not my phone—I never ordered a Verizon phone.

To make things worse, I've already paid off the full cost of the phone through the AT&T app because I thought it was safe to do so since the phone arrived.

It seems like Walmart sent me the wrong phone—one that's already tied to a Verizon account. What should I do? Has anyone had a similar experience? I'm really stuck and don't know how to fix this.

Is this with ATT or Verizon? You should only pay for 4 days prorated pay. FCC complaint is the last resort to sort this out but I'd go that far before trying couple of times. For ATT, you can void the activation fee instantly from the bill

That really sucks. You have my empathy.

Personally, I'd initially write in to Walmart chat and get a reference number for the chat just in case you need the chat looked up later on (by you or by other 3rd parties like AT&T, Verizon, and/or your credit card if you need to dispute the credit card charges that paid off an AT&T phone that you never actually received from walmart.com).

I would also actively screenshot the whole Walmart chat conversation just in case you "accidentally" get disconnected and lose the earlier parts of the walmart chat…even if you are able to finish the Walmart chat the screenshots could be used for reference/evidence if you need it later on, and after receiving the reference number for the chat you could tell Walmart chat something like:

"On November 17th, I placed order _______ with walmart.com and because of the Black Friday sale I should be emailed a $500 egift card within the next 21 days or so.
I ordered an AT&T iPhone 16 Pro Max in size ____ with the attached AT&T phone number ending in 6873, but the package with tracking number _____ that I received on this date_____ contained a VERIZON iPhone 16 Pro Max in size ______ with the attached VERIZON phone number ending in 6735…"

You could then end it with "Could you please help me?"

I personally wouldn't initially offer up the information about already paying off your AT&T phone and try to focus on:

1) walmart.com re-sending you out the correct iPhone with AT&T,

2) telling you what you're supposed to do with the Verizon iPhone that you actually received (I'd possibly try to hold onto it as collateral until you get a new AT&T iPhone 16 pro max in size _____ SUCCESSFULLY sent out to you from walmart.com since you did fully pay for an iPhone 16 pro max in size _____…maybe the person who should have received the verizon iPhone 16 pro max ended up with your AT&T iPhone 16 Pro Max instead?),

3) I'd also try to make sure in the Walmart chat that whatever Walmart does it's not going to somehow refund your $500 egift card…with or without your missing phone being refunded or replaced…

You could also end your initial enquiry to Walmart chat with something like:

"Could you please help me by sending me an AT&T version of the iPhone 16 Pro Max in size ____ like I originally ordered in Walmart order _______, and what should I do with the Verizon version of the iPhone 16 Pro Max that I received? Verizon is probably going to want it back and/or the person with this linked Verizon account is probably going to report it missing to Verizon soon and get it bricked so that it can't be used by anyone else."

You don't have to agree right away with whatever Walmart is offering for making it right, and if it looks unfair (like you somehow lose your $500 gift card) you could always threaten to talk to AT&T chat and/or Verizon chat to get their opinions about what should happen next…(especially since they're both probably going to be annoyed at Walmart.com for making this mess for them to deal with)…

You could tell the walmart chat representative that you'll likely reach out with your Walmart chat reference number after you talk to AT&T and/or Verizon to see what their ideas are…
AND that you DO NOT give walmart/anybody permission to revoke/refund the $500 egift card that you should be receiving from making a new phone contract up for the AT&T iPhone 16 pro max in size ___.
Just because you didn't receive the correct iPhone yet doesn't mean that you should lose the other part of the bundle since you were paying for an iPhone 16 pro max in size ___to be able to get the $500 egift card.

In general you should try to keep as much of the various conversations with walmart, AT&T, and Verizon in writing (hopefully with reference numbers included), so that you can screenshot EVERYTHING!

Right now, you need to try to be in CYA (Cover Your Ass) mode because from a legal perspective a lot of the time: "if it's not in writing then it didn't happen."

Plus, with the various transcripts if the worst case scenario happens you could always dispute your credit card charges that paid off your AT&T iPhone 16 Pro Max since you didn't actually receive the correct phone.

If you need a second opinion about your options you could always go over to att.com, do an AT&T chat, get the reference number for the chat (the reference numbers DO NOT show up at the end of the chat so get it from the live chat representative before you), tell them your whole difficulties with Walmart sending you a Verizon iPhone 16 Pro Max with an attached number ending in 6736 instead of the AT&T iPhone 16 Pro Max with an attached number ending in 6873 that you should have received, and ask AT&T what your options are in their opinion (possibly after hearing their options you should mention whatever Walmart.com suggested).

I do bet that someone is going to be pissed that they didn't receive their Verizon iPhone 16 Pro Max, so you might want to let Walmart chat and/or Verizon chat know before Verizon actually bricks the phone and it becomes a deadweight for everybody.

Good luck!

P.S. Did any slickdealer who bought from Walmart.com not receive their Verizon iPhone 16 pro max, and if it ends in 6735 have you reached out to Walmart, Verizon, or AT&T to see what your options are? Could you please share here what options they gave? Thanks!

Can I cancel Verizon service right now and pay device along with service/activation fees when bill comes at the end of billing cycle? CS told me I only can pay off when bill comes.
Cancel the service now. When the bill arrives, call CS and tell them to waive the activation fee. Verizon waives the activation fee if the service is cancelled within the first 3 days. I have done it multiple times in the past.

Anyone who got multiple ATT lines, did you get charged multiple Activation fees? I disputed online for one activation fees which was approved but the rest were rejected online.

For 3 days service also, they have charged me some dollars.

@gadgetNerd. I just received a bill from AT&T for $115 which is the cost of one month service plus activation fee even though I disconnected 2 days after buying the phone. I know I can avoid the activation fee. What about the month of service? Are they supposed to pro-rate it?
Weird. I just got my first ATT bill today and they only charged me activation and prorated first month bill of $6 for the 3 days it was active. (11/14-11/16). This is a line that I cancelled on day 2 after paying the phone in full and ported out. They didn't even bill me a full month so I got credited for the activation fee immediately and paid the $6+ tax and I'm done with them.

How many lines/phones did you get? Where these all done at same time or different accounts?

You can get only one activation fee voided as it's an one time courtesy

What is the cheapest company to port out to, or if I do not need the number, would porting out help with anything else?
