A low end android phone is way cheaper and offers way more functionality , however schools mandate these calculators (non smart). That is the reason prices are still high.

I can't believe this is not $30. It was $89 20 years ago and it is still $89 today not on sale.

I believe they still need the TI calculators for standardized tests like the SAT

The CAS version with full LCD and full calculus functions is almost 15 years old now.
The CAS version is not much more expensive for a superior device.

I think this calculator's tech is almost 25 years old.

But can it run Doom?
There was a really cool space shooter game we installed on it back in the day. Even had upgradeable weapons!

Minimum wage was only $4 30 years ago, and $16 today. We can argue it's way cheaper today
You are spot on. I worked mowing lawns for $5/each (and also begged my parents for help) to somehow pull together $300 for my HP 48sx graphing scientific calculator back in the day. It was top of the line in its day. I needed it as a freshman in college back in, drum roll please, 1990. It absolutely helped me through many tough classes. It would cost me about $750 in todays money. Fast forward to 2025, this is a fair deal for a much, much, more advanced unit. My son has this model and loves it. Paid $120 or more last year. To the nay-sayers, please help us out and go build one as good as this, invest in all the manufacturing, QA, training, support, distribution, etc., and sell it cheaper!

So in a few years when I have to worry about these things, can I just give the kids the original TI-84 or maybe a TI-86 or TI-89 instead of the current model?

they give you one in the test app.
I don't know why you received so many thumbs down. Desmos is embedded in the testing app and is far superior to a TI-84. https://satsuite.collegeboard.org...tor-policy

OMG, now you mention HP calculator and I have flash back of all the bad memories from 90's. To this day I still can' believe how hard one has to press the HP's buttons to get a response, and they are ugly as heck, very unintuitive to use.

HP calculators and Smith Corona typewriters with their button/keys, vs TI/Casio and Brother, night and day in build quality.
