I'd guess they're pretty much the same. They're just different sizes. The snare on this kit is the PDX-8 which is 10". The 17 uses a PDX-12 which is 12". The toms on the 17 are PDX-8's. The toms on this kit are PDX-6's which are 8".

I can assure you, they're not. Even though they are shown in the picture, even the mid to high-end kits don't include the hi-hat stand, kick pedals or drum throne. The PDX-12 has a much better feeling rim for rimshots, but I think you're right in that it's mainly just a size difference. The PDX-12 snare still isn't digital, so it doesn't offer positional sensing. Gotta go up to the big bucks kits for that.
For anyone on the fence about this kit, know that upgrading Roland parts a la carte is VERY expensive. Get into it and want to upgrade to the newer entry level module? $1000. Want the larger PDX-12 snare? $300. Want the new 2pc digital hi-hat? $1000, plus stand.

This is an ok starter kit for the money but you're going to want to upgrade the hihat and kick pretty quickly and that gets pricey fast. I'd recommend pricing that out and seeing if it's better going with a higher end kit or maybe compare to lower end brands that might give a bit more for your money.

I have played Roland drums for years and this kit was the only one that I found required upgrades basically immediately, which made it not such a deal after all.

I am interested in learning. I am a complete novice. I am planning on gifting myself one set for Christmas. My planned budget is to stay within one grand all included. Would this be a good choice? Or should I look at something else? Are there usually good deals on drum sets on Black Friday?
