The RT-BE96U stands out as a high-end WiFi 7 router with strong range, fast speeds, and solid stability, especially in AiMesh setups. Setup is described as straightforward through the Asus web interface, and the router's 4x4 tri-band design, two 10Gb ports, and built-in AdGuard Home add real flexibility. Real-world reports include whole-home coverage in large houses and smoother gaming and streaming after upgrades. Main caveats are its large size, lack of SFP+, some early firmware rough edges, and ongoing Asus security concerns that make firmware updates important.

  • The router can be used as a main unit in an Asus AiMesh setup with wired backhaul.

  • The RT-BE96U supports router-level AdGuard, which can reduce device-by-device setup for ad blocking.

  • The RT-BE96U can be described as stable after firmware updates, with gaming lag spikes and streaming issues disappearing.

  • The RT-BE96U can deliver strong real-world WiFi speeds across a large multi-story home, including weak areas.

  • The RT-BE96U can be difficult to set up when using AdGuard Home, because the configuration process may be more detailed.

  • The RT-BE96U can be enormous and may lack standard wall-mounting options, which can complicate placement.

  • The RT-BE96U can fail to detect internet when connected to a cable modem or another router, and it may even block access to router settings.

  • The RT-BE96U may lack SFP+ ports, which can be a drawback for a higher-priced router.

I can't believe this thing doesn't have SFP+. What a joke for a $300+ router.
I picked up NIB, UCG-Fiber for 200 flat on ebay with free shipping. Never hurts to look. Has plenty of in/outs but of course it's not a router and has no wifi.

Just returned this piece of junk.
Couldn't detect internet when connected to my cable modem.
Couldn't detect internet when connected to my other router.
It then proceeded to create a wifi network that couldn't access anything - not even able to change the router settings.

What the heck is going on with ASUS? My old RT-AX88U works great and they've devolved into this?

I watched the video they were talking about, but this was back in July and has long since been patched with firmware updates. The vulnerability was discovered in Jan with less than a thousand compromised routers in the US by May.GN weren't being alarmist, just fact-based reporting and reminders to keep firmware updated. OP was the one being alarmist and it seems they only read the headline or didn't understand that GN brought up this vulnerability as more of a PSA that they could fit into an Asus video that was mostly about mobo issues.
I have the AC5300 ROG
And it's the worst router I have ever owned .
Merlin didn't hardly improve it.
All the "special features" had to be turned off to get it to even work at all.
It gets bombarded with Russian malware and viruses daily.
Even when it was supported
Totally unstable POS from day one and not any better than my ac66u it replaced.
Same issue persisted
AI mesh doesn't work either.
Oddly enough I beas able to get the 5300 to add as a mesh node with the 66u as the main
But not the other Way around so it's useless.
I love Asus software interface but half of it is pure BS.
Don't like the way they do the clients list either with everything jumping around, just show the list of every client and an indicator light next to each client name instead of having everything jumping around.
