This is the one to buy, I have 3 of the standard and 2 of the lidded ones and the standard ones are gathering dust. After ~3 years of nearly daily use the unlidded ones were showing wear around the top steel ring and the enamel is chipping around the base (they are not really dishwasher safe I'm guessing.) So I picked up a pair of the lidded ones (for ~23 each) The lidded ones feel more substantial (especially in the handle) and weigh about 50% more which is definitely not in the lid mechanics. Additionally they are much better for outside (bugs/weather) usage as well as for a shower beverage of choice plus the lid means they maintain their temp a bit longer in case you're making mixed drinks in these or are drinking something to be savored. The steins are good, but the lidded ones are surprisingly an order of magnitude better so are DEFINITELY worth $3 more.

As such, despite not really needing more than 2 with lids, I'm picking up another lidded one for $5 less than I paid for either of the other two, repped.

Question please. It says "screw on lid". By chance can the lid be removed from the handle if desired. It does not look like it based on the photos.

Also "3 position lid" I assume means that it stays open at 3 different heights.

The lid is definitely not screwed in so I think that's from a different product. if you wanted to permanently remove it I think you could just knock out the (tiny!) metal rod that works as a pivot with a small pick and a hammer. I suspect the lid will get looser with more use but as of now (3 months of use) mine will stay open in whatever position it is above about 80° (with 90 being straight up and 170ish being as far as it goes) it also clangs when you close it depending on how hard you close it.
