I was a Ralphs in So California and many of the cards on the rack were tampered with even though they looked perfectly sealed. I opened a few and found the redemption code scratched off.
I would ask the cashier to give you a new card from their locked storage, then open the card to check if the code has been tampered before you pay for it.
