Awful transfer. The DNR is a disaster, and James Cameron's response to it is even more laughable. Not that it matters, anyway, since he's going to make movies with AI.

I heard the Terminator 4k transfer was awesome. Which version is the best if it's not this one?

I was extremely disappointed that Skynet failed to take over the planet.

It is AI DNR'ed but you are right much better than the Abyss and Aliens. Is T1 perfect, no, but it is acceptable. My only gripe is the pew pew from Arnold's gun in one scene in atmos, otherwise the Atmos is great. You can here better fun shots for that scene in the original audio track

James Cameron 4Ks are all a pass for me due to the awful AI work done. In most cases the previous blu-rays are the way to go.

This transfer is actually not too bad. It is T2 that is the abomination.

Can you show me where in the article he specifically mentions this movie? The last I checked this isnt Terminator Zero nor an animation.

It doesn't. It shows James Cameron's making fun of fans criticizing him for using excessive DNR.

The DNR is pretty heavy on this 4K. There at least isn't the AI overload of T2 and a bunch of the other Cameron movies.

Digital noise reduction to get rid of grain for some reason studios feel the need to use it.

I bought this months ago on similar deal. Not redeemable with Apple iTunes...had to choose VUDU. Sort of bummed since all my other Terminator movies are with Apple.

Digital Noise Reduction. Cameron prefers a smooth digital look that older movies shot on film couldn't achieve so he has the movies digitally smoothed out to get rid of the film grain. Terminator by many accounts still holds up okay in 4K. I personally prefer the 2013 blu-ray release though as the DNR in that one was lighter and did less to make things look smooth and waxy. At the very least though Terminator did not have the heavy AI upscaling that made movies like T2 and True Lies look laughable.

The perfect scenario for movies shot on film is to have a straight scan and transfer with all their grain intact. Film grain scanned at 4K on a high bitrate UHD disc looks excellent and needs no smoothing out. Directors like Cameron and Peter Jackson disagree though and would prefer all their movies look like they were shot digitally.

For Terminator 2 you want the 2015 blu-ray. That is the version that looks right with almost no DNR.

But don't you lose sharpness of 4K and DV/HDR if you go with the 2015 Bluray?
