If you really want an expert opinion on the picture quality, go to the www.blu-ray.com forums of the specific movie you want to know about and search for Geoff D. The site reviews are sometimes accurate and sometimes way off. Obviously some people will have their own opinion, but if you want a fair and comprehensive review, he's the guy to steer you in the right direction as to whether the transfer is worth the price.

Yes, and you want to lose the sharpness. The AI sharpness of the 4K T2 release is the problem. 4K isn't the end all of movies. If a proper 4K scan is done it can be worth getting, but if they are just upscaling 2K transfers or using bad AI to over sharpen scenes you are often better off with the 1080p blu-ray. It is going to vary release to release. Look at multiple reviews and the images posted on places like blu-ray.com.

Keep in mind there is rarely a straight scan, when there is it's not that great.

What a movie is shot in(resolution) isn't the key.
Almost all "4k" movies are transferred to at least one form of HDR metadata.
How well that's done & its tone mapping determines PQ.

Let's not forget current commercial displays can't even take full advantage of static HDR, let alone dynamic HDR!

People make this sound like the wax figures from the Predator Hunter edition every time its brought up in terms of fine details being DNR'd into oblivion.

Agreed, this is definitely a real thing (Cameron DNR ing his films to death because he and his team wants it that way), however T1 isn't the lead offender. It's not great but it's passable IMO. It's T2, True Lies, Aliens that are the standout wax people Cameron releases.
