I own this, and I've been using OpemWRT since 2018, here are my conclusion:
Pros.
It is compact although it is not as compact as less powerful variants, I miss the AR750S
2.5G ports, you don't see it too often, if you need it, it is well worth it.
The touch screen is more of gimmick but can be useful, especially when you need to to switch between multiple modes, many cases OpenWRT STA mode will prevent it from bringing up it's own wireless, results in you have to use wired connection to change configuration. The touch screen can be protected by a 4 digits PIN now, so it is less of a security concern.
The built in VPN GUI is very convenient, it is NOT available in Chinese version(as Chinese gov. Don't like VPN). I personally appreciate it while I'm fully capable of setup everything in cli.
Cons.
No more TF card slot, which I personally find useful, as I used to have web shares to pass files between Android, iOS, macOS and windows.
This thing runs really hot, and draws a lot of power, you can run it off battery pack but not as long as you might want to.
This thing might never see vanilla OpenWRT release, instead of CCP, it is the closed source drivers of western chips maker to be blamed.
The MLO(multi-link-operation) for WiFi 7 is buggy and basically unusable, I wouldn't bother if this is what you value. The signal is weaker and in certain cases the compatible devices is connected without Internet (faulty link).
I contacted gl inet and they confirmed the tool chain (sdk) is no longer publicly available, you can use original OpenWRT tool chain with same arch as target but nothing is guaranteed.
The last if not least, I think gl inet is being a little bit too comfortable with its market leasing position, I'd recommend you skip this generation and watch out for the next gen, this specific model felt like half baked and not polished at all.

Honest question, what's the reason to pay extra for a higher end model like this one? I have a lower model which was like $30. Seems to work just fine, no issue streaming on multiple devices, coverage is way more than enough for a hotel room.
I think it mostly comes down to VPN performance. The low end travel routers are usually low VPN performance or no VPN support.
You do also get better wifi performance and 2.5G LAN speeds with this model, but 99% of the time when I'm traveling I wouldn't care about that. Maybe sometimes though. Most of the time in hotels I'm just trying to get reasonable Internet access and I don't care if it is 50 mbps or gigabit.

If you're travelling and the WiFi you're using requires web-based logins, or limits the number of items that can be connected per room / account.
For example, I usually travel with a google home speaker, a roku and a security camera (one too many break ins). They, in addition to the phone and laptop, are usually too many devices for one room number, and most places use web based access pages, which at a minimum are a pain to set up on every device, or even impossible on some. With a device like this, I set up everything to talk to this device in advance. I even have it set up to connect automatically to my home network via vpn. Then when I arrive, i only need to connect this device to their network, everything else just works, takes me two minutes, max. And I'm automatically watching shows from my local market, streaming plex, saving security video to my home server, listing to music from my accounts, etc. Extra work to set up the first time, but much easier every trip.

Keep an eye if you're paying thru PayPal on AliExpress. I recently saw some of my transactions flagged as a cash advancement which incurred extra fees on my credit card for each purchase. There's also a Reddit thread on it.
Same, did you dispute?

Stupid question, do you need to have paid VPN subscription to have it work (using your home network to watch Netflix etc. while traveling)? TIA.

No, setup a VPN on your home router, then use this device to connect to it. Most routers have a VPN option integrated; WireGuard works well.

I have older mt1300 and even older ar300m routers and both can connect to WireGuard and OpenVPN. My home connection sadly maxes at 20mbps uploads, so faster vpn performance on these newer routers can't really help me. I also like the smaller size of the older travel routers and the mt1300 has two LAN Ethernet ports in addition to 1 wan. This new one looks cool but not worth the price for the touchscreen when considering the larger size and higher power usage for my usage.
