Why are they making "buttery" crackers with sunflower seed oil? They should just use butter.
If anyone wants real buttery crackers instead of these fake ones, look for Stonewall kitchen crackers. They've been appearing at a lot of grocery stores lately.

Which major grocery chains?
As far as your question...I'd guess for a longer shelf life, and/or to save on costs. I agree that it doesn't sound like the best choice for real buttery flavor. I'd say with a 4.5-star average rating, don't knock these until you've tried them.

I like the buttery flavor of Keebler's Club crackers (4.7-star rated), which I just checked (and I presume what these are modeled after), and they use Soybean oil.

Repped you for your suggestion. Not heard of Stonewall Kitchen crackers. Here is a link to see the Sweet Butter variety. IDK which grocers carry them, and Google Shopping tab didn't help. $8 on their own site, so not exactly slick pricing, but sometimes quality beats savings.

For major grocery store chains Giant, Safeway, and The Fresh Market carry Stonewall Kitchen crackers. You may also find smaller local grocery chains carrying it by searching on Instacart. If anything these crackers should have a longer shelf life than crackers made with oil. Butter contains mostly saturated fat, which is very resistant to oxidation (going rancid). Soybean oil and sunflower seed oil are mostly polyunsaturated fat, which oxidizes much more quickly.
