These 9V rechargeable batteries are best suited to low drain devices like smoke detectors, TENS units, voltmeters, sprinkler controllers, and other occasional use gear. The low price makes repeated recharging cheaper than buying alkaline 9V batteries, and the lithium style packs are described as holding voltage better than NiMH. The main concerns are capacity and longevity, since the 200mAh rating is viewed as very small and some expect short runtime. Charging compatibility also needs checking, though standard 9V chargers may work with the built in cutoff.

Older post but the topic came again for different HW 9V rechargeable batteries. These ones are Li-ion.
I have some older EBL Li-ion and it's exactly like you said. 2 pouches x 4.2V when freshly charged, goes to 2x3.6V in weeks or months at most. Not enough for smoke detectors. Capacity around 400-600mAh.
However I think the newer ones sold on Amazon such as the HW 9V Li-ion rechargeable have a single larger pouch and voltage booster/regulator. That's why people are measuring 9V constant. It will keep 9V for most of discharge cycle then drop to something like 1V suddenly. Similar to AA Li-ion that keep 1.5V constant.
The credibility of some people on Amazon, especially the [Vine] reviewers is questionable at the least. I read people blithely stating they are LSD and will last a year becasue it's in the marketing drivel. There is absolutely no way they could actually know. Mostly just marketing toadies.
Petty greed can erode away honesty.

Fair enough. And that's why I test everything myself. I have had good luck with many of the more reputable Amazon battery brands - EBL, Tenergy, Hixon, Tenavolts etc. In particular for the 9V HW Li-Ion rechargeables, this seems to be the new direction: 1 Li-Ion cell, and boosted/regulated voltage. See the link below. 5400mwh at 9V is 600mAh, which seems reasonable (not inflated).
"Wide Compatibility: EBL 9 volt batteries provide stable voltage until fully drained, ideal for smoke alarms, microphones, toys, and medical devices. Standard 6F22 cell size fits all 9V gadgets."

That 9v tech is new to me. You may like reading about a 9v called Znter [lygte-info.dk]and the iPowerUS (I own) in this disassembly article. [lygte-info.dk]
HJK, as he was called, is a marvel and did HUGE volume of EXCELLENT work that was published in BudgetLightForum.and Candlelight forum.
Use https://lygte-info.dk/ and you can get to his main index. It's massive. Got a majority of my information from him and BudgetLightForum. Incredible resource.
Unfortunately I think the pace caught up with him. He published for free and would take no gifts to keep clear of compromises. He didn't pull punches. He quit a few years ago. With the pace of electronic development some of his material is dated now.

Thx for sending. Familiar with budgetlight and candlelight forums but hadn't heard of HJK. Another website I like a lot is zeroair.org. Great thorough, unbiased reviews for flashlights and headlamps.
The Zntr seems similar to the new EBL. The only conclusion i can draw (hope at least) from the EBL page for that new battery is that somebody developed a high efficiency and cheap enough buck converter that has very small parasitic drain and can be used in very low discharge devices such as smoke detectors.

Agree there. The key phrase is "high efficiency". Those important details are never noted and make a HUGE difference in actual use over time.
.....SOME....of the 1.5v AA can do LSD like an Eneloop, but most have 40-80% loss in a year, and the really poor ones it's 100%. That's worse than NiCads.
I've been pleased with the iPowerUS. I got them from an Aquarium volunteer job as routine maintenence swaps from their in-house communication devices. Used hard, already had years on them, and continue to work great, though after 10 years showing some age. Lets a person know what a GOOD lithium product can do.
The EBL, (AAA, AA, C, D, 9v-I bought a BIG package) I have are merely OK. Their internal resistance goes up rapidly and their ability to terminate correctly in any charger I have starts to deteriorate, The charger that came with it is a shelf queen. I rarely use it, to charge the 9v.
I think the EBL marketing team is excellent, engineering-not so much.
If I weren't flush with iPowerUS I might buy some to try out, but I got to put myself on a 'battery diet'.

My 7-10 year old AA and AAA Eneloops are starting to fail with fairly limited use (i do partial charges once or twice a year). Similar with Amazon Basics AA and AAA NiMh batteries. Also similar with the Tenergy 9V, D, AA and AAA I have, some 7 years and older starting to fail but most still working fine. In my experience Tenergy LSD are true LSD.
The Hixon and Tenavolts have a few years on them. They are 1.5V Li-ion AA and AAA. Out of about 25 I have, one failed.
The EBLs I have are 9V Li-ion, but fairly new. About 10, and working well so far. They have a small dedicated pentagon shaped charger with 5 bays. Works well, bright lights when charging that get dimmer and eventually off as the batteries get charged.
I have the large 4 bay EBL universal charger that can charge D size and also 9V. The 9V charge doesn't have any intelligence in it not even a timer, you have to remove batteries after 3 hours or so. For 9V Ni-Mh I use a smart universal Ansmann charger with 2 bays for 9V and a Tenergy 4 bay charger, TN-136.
Mostly use an Opus BT-C3100 to charge NiMh and especially Li-ion 18650, 21700 etc., an older Powerex charger for NiMh and several Nitecores. Also use the small Panasonic 4 bay charger for AA and AAA, works well, but sensitive/won't charge older batteries
