shucking you said? that should be doable and good value, as long as you don't store critical data on it, I say it's perfectly fine for your plex collection

Barracuda drives are just asking for trouble, especially in a NAS array. I remember the Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB days with the 5% annualized failure rate disks.

Could be fine, could be bad. These drives are not rated to be on 24x7 and only a couple of year warranty and if you shuck it then it's basically 0.

Personally I've been holding out for another brand to have some decent sales

Bought a seagate 24tb external and it died within five months. I said to myself seagate must have cleaned their act up in the last twenty years before I purchased it. I was lucky, I just lost 4k disc rips I easily downloaded again, but had to pay return shipping to seagate.

I've never seen sentiment this strong against shucking these drives to use in a NAS. That said if everybody else now thinks its such a bad idea.. then Im not going to be the fool who goes that advice to find out. I want about 50TB in new HDD to build a new NAS solution.. so bring on the deals for the WD RED or Gold, or Seagate Ironwolf or EXOS.

I always shuck these and never use them in NAS, more convenient to access them in USB docks.

However this reminds me, where are the refurb enterprise HD deals? Did they really vanish to store/do more AI shit for big tech and we're left with MSRP reds?

I know Seagate has been pretty unreliable for a long time, except Exos... But is a Barracuda still unreliable for cold storage? This would be fired up for maybe an hour every handful of weeks or so, when I'd do a manual backup.

Alternatively, white labels, do you have a source recommendation for possibly similar size/price?

These are so loud even at idle, there's a thumping noise. Also they run so much hotter than any other drive I have owned.
