This is I believe the cheapest a colorsoft has been, and the 16gb supposedly doesn't have the yellow band issues that some people have had with the 32gb model.

For anyone looking, there is also a bundle below with the clear and fabric case for only 1.99 more at 171.98. The case is normally 36.99 so it seems worthwhile even as a backup case

Worth noting that if you have a kindle tied to your account, you'll see an "upgrade offer" that does NOT require you to send in your old kindle, at least if it's below a certain generation. I used that to buy a green base kindle for $64 the other day (I have a 2nd gen paperwhite I think? it replaced the kindle keyboard I loved for a decade before stepping on it). It's offering me this kindle for $135 even though I already used the offer once already and the new kindle has shipped.

Unfortunately, while a kindle user since ~2010, I don't think 16gb or even 32gb is even adequate for my needs. If I'm going with color, I'd prefer something that can natively read cbr/cbz and not have to convert and swap things off and on. I have some cbr/cbz that are 100mb+ per volume, with many volumes in the series. Maybe I could deal with a jailbroken kindle and loading cbzs from a nas, a google drive or swapping conversions in and out on my amazon account or something, but I don't want to count on that.

The only color ereader that really intrigues me is the Boox Go Color 7 because it has access to the play store and a microsd slot, so I'd have a ton of flexibility in both local cbz readers and manga repo apps. Supports a pen too (though kinda rudimentary, not for drawing). Costs twice as much though...

I was thinking of getting that precise same one, but that bundle doesn't allow for trade ins it seems.
I would double-check - the trade-in of an old Fire Stick is showing active for my bundle order (in fact, it calculated 20% off the entire bundle, not just the Kindle). Ordered the Signature edition "essentials bundle" with cradle and case.

When you say "share an unlimited plan," do you mean a subscription to Kindle Unlimited? Here's a discussion [reddit.com] on how that could work.If you have access to being able to join one or more library systems in your area, odds are good they'll have a much better selection of ebooks than you can get on KU. That's what I've found, and the subscription wasn't useful to me. Worth looking into if where you live has reciprocal agreements with other area libraries, as the more the merrier as far as increasing choices and decreasing wait times. As to ads on devices, it's only on the lockscreen, they aren't present when you're using the device. And iirc, all the ads are just for books. It's not a big annoyance at all. Also, you might want to doublecheck if Kids Kindles or Kids profiles get those ads, I'm not sure they do. But like I said, the ads aren't a big deal, and that's coming from someone who pays a lot extra to subscribe to the ad-free version of all our streaming services -- I can't stand ads. And the ones on the lockscreen don't bother me.As to the third-party readers, you'd really need to pick a device and read up on that specific device to see how it works with Amazon and about if it has ads. And if you want a KU subscription, check how that works with the device. To me it seems the easiest/best thing is to stick with a Kindle, especially if you plan on using Kindle books. Also, if you have any old Amazon device to trade in, you can get 20% off. You'd probably have to buy them on separate accounts, as I don't think you can get the 20% on a Kindle twice in the same quarter on the same account (I just buy one on my account and one on my husband's when we want to devices in the same sale so we can get 20% off both). BUT the trade in doesn't have to be an old Kindle, my list for trade in is also showing old Echo smart speakers, fire sticks and a blink camera, all eligible to trade in to get 20% off an ereader. Also, it sounds like for your needs, you don't really need the Colorsoft. A basic Kindle ereader would probably do it for about $80 (minus 20% if you have a trade-in), and the basic paperwhite and kid's paperwhite are also both less than the Colorsoft.
Thank you for providing all the detailed and thorough information. I will review the link you shared and consider choosing the smaller, more affordable Kindle for them.

those thinking of doing trade in for the 20% off might want to rethink. i am seeing an additional 25 $ discount if i do NOT apply trade in. certainly tradein gives a bigger discount but the difference isn't worth it imo

Oh, I forgot to mention, IF your kids plan to read comics or something with a lot of graphics, then we're back to the Colorsoft as a nice option. And it's ad-free (though like I said, ads on Kindles aren't too bad). But if they don't need color, it's really down to budget as to whether you want to go ahead and get the much higher priced device anyway. It does seem like a nice device, there are definite pros and cons. You could get two basic ereaders for the price of this one Colorsoft. But if your budget would fit the Colorsoft and you like all the features more than a standard one, go for it. I suspect the kids will be thrilled with any kindle under the tree, it will be loads of fun for them to pick books and read on their new device.

Plus, the Colorsoft and less pricey Paperwhite are both waterproof, so you may want to consider if you have a need for that. I love my paperwhite, but being waterproof wasn't a deciding factor for me. It might be for some. I think they're all pretty cool, from the cheapest to priciest, it's just down to what you need and how the kids will use them. "Kids editions" of ereaders have 2-year warranties. If I remember correctly, you can return anytime in two years for a replacement. If your kids tend to be rough on their belongings, that's another consideration.

I don't think that offer is on all accounts, it may only be on accounts that pay for Prime as opposed to family members' accounts. On the Colorsoft product page, it says you can use code "getkindle15" for 15% off - but it only says that on my husband's account (he's the one with the Prime membership). On my account, as a family member of his, it's not showing that code. I put the Colorsoft in my cart and tried the code out of curiosity, and it wouldn't work for me.

And the discount at 20% off is $34. That's very worth the trade-in if, like me, you have loads of all kinds of old Amazon devices you don't need anymore in a drawer. Plus getting extra money for the device you trade as well. Though it would be worth just doing 15% if you really wanted to keep your old device and had nothing else to trade.

How can you tell if you are NOT required to send in your device? It's letting me trade in my Firestick, but unfortunately I can't find it. So I don't actually have it to send in

There's a similar upgrade option on Kindle scribe, I'm going for that. 32GB is coming out to $240 after tax. Has anyone used this model?

I hadn't heard of this, a search tells me:

some users have reported receiving specific, limited-time "upgrade offers" directly tied to very old Kindle models where the terms and conditions explicitly stated that recycling or sending in the old device was not required. These are generally exceptions to the standard terms and are not the default for most trade-ins.

Basically, if you have such an offer, it will be clear that you have it, and it sounds like it's not something most of us will have.
