The Target GC was not the normal ones with a graphic on the card. That is what I brought to the register but the Target lady instead had some that were more boring looking without any graphic.
As a reminder, in the past you were able to order more after a few days. Don't know if the same will happen this year but fingers crossed!

Bottom line: Yes, it's worth buying Apple products this way, but be aware of the effort involved in managing gift cards and protecting your email access.
On Apple's side: In 2024 September, Apple stopped allowing in-store pickup for customized Apple Watches during the launch periods (couple of weeks), it's shipping only. Now in 2025, they're rolling out shipping-only for the first couple weeks of new releases—even for lower-priced items like their new $40 40W USB-C PD charger, which doesn't need any in-store customization labor at all.
In short for Apple: yes, but first couple of weeks after product is out, it may be limited to shipping only.
Worth knowing: You can buy and return unopened Apple products to work around the $2,000 purchase limit, but Apple now refunds as plain-text gift card codes emailed directly. Apple may flag that behavior—be aware of the risk. Guard your email carefully—if compromised, anyone with that email can redeem it.
On Target's side: Since 2023, Target stopped allowing Target Gift Card combining, so managing cards more than 10 requires extra work. Also, if you experience gift card fraud, Target's customer service has tightened significantly—I spent 6 hours on phone chat with different reps when I dealt with fraud.
