Wife has an M1 Ipad Pro 11". Would this be much of an upgrade??
Refresh rate is better on the pro line...it might be noticeable to her in a bad way. In the Apple Store, I do notice a bit of jelly scroll effect in landscape on the M3 Air, which has a refresh rate of 60 Hz, so it probably impacts the fact that I can see the effect. The Pro's refresh rate is 120 Hz, and there is probably no jelly scroll, or the refresh rate of 120 Hz at least makes any jelly scroll effect negligible.
Speakers and microphones may be better on the Pro. Data transfer speeds via USB cable probably also better.
I'm not saying this is a bad deal, but I would wonder if the Air really beats out the M1 Pro on any appreciable functions that matter to your wife's use cases for the iPad. I guess if your wife does a lot of FaceTime with the iPad in landscape mode, the position of the camera is now on the long edge and more intuitive for facetime calls; so that might be better. The Apple Pencil Pro works with the M3 Air (but not the M1 Pro) and has more functionality than the Apple Pencil 2nd generation (which works with he M1 Pro).
Depends on the use case for the iPad. What is in need of upgrading from the iPad she already has?
Just wishful thinking. Used ones were as low as $288 last month on Amazon. And iPad Air M1's were $300 from Walmart last week. $449 is the regular sale price - nothing special.

If you buy with a Target card, you'll save an additional 5%= $22.50.
