If you need storage, the no storage model doesn't come with the tray.
The storage tray costs an extra $19 so $179 for 512Gb is pretty good deal.

'If you get into other UniFi accessories…'

UniFi is a deep, expensive hole. I started out with this exact gateway earlier this year and have expanded to multiple switches and miscellaneous hardware. Their ecosystem is amazing for those that want a little more control over their home network without having to play network engineer everyday. It's the Apple of networking. It just works and you get addicted to expansion.

I would like to know as well. Also is it a subscription model for capabilities like ad blocking?
It has free domain (by type: ad, malware, adult, etc) and region blocking, the list is supplied by Cloudflare. Im not familiar with firewalla, but if you expect to use a 3rd party lists like pi-hole, no. If you need pi-hole, you can always spin in it up in a container for free. Once you get into this eco-system, you will disover the power is in the free software features that constantly updates. its literally like Apple, the power is in the software and the integration and control of the eco-system.

No POE, if you intend to get into other Unifi accesories, you will have to spend even more on POE injectors or a switch with POE. You need the Gateway Fiber at min which has 4 POE+ ports
FYI Only 1 port is POE+

Thanks. I may get this and give it a try. I am happy with my firewalla. What this seems to offer for me is good integration with doorbells and cameras of their own brand. Their prices are reasonable and they use wired POE internet so it is one wire. I wonder if I still use the firewalla as the main router/firewall and use this to handle all my ioT stuff on a separate internal network if that would work well, then make a rule so the ioT network has blocked access to my internal network but my internal network can access the ioT network. I am tired of Nest stuff for cameras and doorbells, once I discovered that Nest lied about not having an internal battery in their doorbell. It lasts about 3 years and then Nest expects you to buy a new one since they dont make it easy to replace a $10 battery.

I'm torn between this and the Dream Router 7. They seem to share the same basic hardware, with the exception of the UDR7 using an SD card for camera storage and the UCG-Max uses an SSD. But the UDR7 comes with full Wifi-7 already built in, for $50 more than the UCG-Max. That's an extra $200 or so to add to the UCG-Max.

Am I missing something? If I'm not sure I'd ever spring for the cameras, then the SSD doesn't really matter. Right?

So is this a router?

How to do WiFi , like mesh?

How does this compare to glinet routers?

I'm just going to buy this and replace my aging USG3 for now I guess. My Unifi APs are all just Wifi6 and my POE switch (The good ol' US-8-60W) and TP-Link hub patch hub are just 1 gig anyway. When a decently priced non Unifi switch comes out I'll just upgrade to that and at least my hardwired stuff can enjoy the extra speeds then. Running 1 gig out via PoE to the WIfi6 APs is probably good enough anwyay....

Just trying to talk myself into buying only this and not spending any more ridiculous money on network equipment this Christmas.

What you are asking about is VLANS, yes the unifi ecosystem supports them, way easier with their APs as it integrates and you can set VLANS by Wifi SSID (or physical ports on the gateway that has the network controller) + firewall rules to allow certain MAC ID to access a VLAN for lets say IOT devicea, the more painful way is by MAC ID without their APs. There is a huge ease of use using their accessories, and thats where the rabbit hole begins. If you already know you want to jump into larger POE footprint with VLANs in your house, just find the rack mounted UDM gateway + POE switches on FB marketplace, there are deals to be had.

You are correct, but who invests in a Unifi Protect gateway and cant use its full feature set with 3rd party cameras? Have you even seen what a full Unifi protect stack can do with video? Its insane, and I dont even care about cameras. You can do keyword searches for license plate numbers, "black car", "bicycle", etc. If you have photos of people in its records, you can just type their name and all the video clips show up. Its on another planet for prosumer video recording.

Jokes on you, I have a UDM PRO connected to a XG 10 POE via its 10gbs SFP+, which means full 10GBE backbone. A UNAS PRO is connected to the XG10 POE via 10gbs SFP+ as well. Who said a UDM PRO is "out dated". The UDM PRO still has 1 additional 10gbs SFP+ free should I wish to expand to another XG POE unit, but not needed for now. The UDM PRO is already living in the future with 10x10GBE POE+++ ports.
So you are confirming the rabbit hole? You actually bought a 10Gb switch and a 10Gb SPF+, which together were probably similar in cost to the UDM Pro if not more....

Jokes still on you, I bought the UDM PRO (has 2 10gbs SFP+ ports) for $175 on FB Marketplace last year, and bought the XG 10 POE for $575 unopened, no sales taxes, no tariff line charges this month on FB marketplace. The XG10 POE (10x10gbs GBE POE+++) replaced a 24port 1gbs standard POE (16 POE+, 8 non-POE) switch ($175 on FB marketplace last year), which I sold for $200 this week. This is a rabbit hole, but in your original response, the UDM PRO still is in the future, its an ecosystem that is now 10gbs with GBE ports on the XG 10 P)E switch, not a singular unit of hardware. Aint no one run a house on just 1 gateway. Welcome to the Unifi ecosystem, you need to read the specs of "outdated" Unifi hw, they carry long into the future as long as you see 10gbs SFP+ ports on them. Anything limited to 1gbs or 2.5gbs is the past. POE+++ with up to 90w delivery, you looking at proxmox/linux/freebsd servers that will arrive with 10GBE and up to 90w of power on a single cat6 cable.

Nice price, especially with the PayPal 20%.. Just got a UCG Ultra a month or so ago. Don't need NVR or anything. Just trying to find a reason to purchase.. 🤔
How did you use it? I tried and the buy now pay later did not show up as a choice even though I saved it earlier.
