They kind of look like they should have been $5 from the beginning. A few years ago Costco was selling "life sized" 5ft tall Mickey and Minnie Mouse plush toys for $19.99 each.
I'm also almost 100% sure that these were being sold at Dollar Tree at one point for $5 when they introduced the "Plus" section to their stores.
