Anyone has any comments about this one? My 8 year old would like a 3D printer as his Christmas gift.
There is no doubt it is a quality printer. Keep in mind it doesn't support color out of the box (without feeding it in manually?), that cost an extra ($130 if you get the combo it says at writing this), which is usually cheapest to buy with the printer as a combo.
There are a couple printers that are color ready for about the same price. The ad5x I've been getting for around $250 shipped. With a lot of fairly easy upgrades (like an enclosure), it can be made into a best of class. It also saves some space, having the spools hanging from the side. Probably the best deal out there, but is it kid friendly? In some ways maybe more so. I especially like the tool end on this one which is a quick change system with no wires to even contend with in changing or fixing nozzle issues. I'm not sure that the mini can even say that.
Then there is the kobra 3. It also is a pretty good printer, albeit a bed slinger like this one (the adx5 is a core xy, which is arguably a much better system), but comes with a heated 4 spool material handling system, something the mini doesn't even if you get the combo (it is open air like the ad5x). The mini has a rather ungainly material handling system that is open air, and unlike the ad5x, I don't know if you can print an enclosures / dyers for it.
Around $220 for the kobra 3. It is hard to beat the 4 spool material handling system on the kobra 3, since it works as a dyer also, printing or not (but needs to be hooked to the printer). A dryer will cost you $100 for anything worth having alone. I bought one of the kobra 3s just for that, but they could be a bit more fiddly than the other two.
The mini also has the smallest bed at I think 180 mm, compared to the kobra at ~256 (a little taller on that end) and the ad5x at 220.
