Does anyone if there are generic toners for these? And whether they work well with this printer?

This is a great deal for a cheap color laser printer. It's a new model, not an unsupported closeout. Also, it's available for the same price at other retailers like Staples, Office Depot, B&H Photo, and Dell.

I've been using generic toners with a Canon MF634CDW laser printer without problem.
Then again, I've avoided updating the printer's firmware for a couple years...

Plus, Staples offers 50% back in Rewards points on any printer this week (if you're a Rewards member, of course).

If one of those ink tank inkjets (smart tank and ecotank) are the same $200 price, what would be recommended? That or a laser printer?

I wondered the same. My experience with tank / cartridge printers is clogged color nozzles resulting from print almost exclusively B&W and very little color. This was years ago, so I went to a B&W laser. I was reading some of the feedback on the Staples site for a $3xx tank printer and saw references to clogged color nozzles. Looks like it is still an issue but interested in hearing from others about this

First... depends upon your usage - what, how often, etc. that you print. Second - I'd never buy an inkjet... a laser printer is the only printer I would buy unless I was printing photos, and then I'd buy a dedicated photo inkjet.

I've had the Epson EcoTank 2803 for 2 years so far and I've been pretty happy with it. The thing with the supertank printers is that you have to use them fairly frequently. If you don't they run the risk of clogging. However, as long as you don't go months on end without printing, they generally are quite reliable.

This deal is a great price for a color laser printer. I don't think you can beat the reliability of laser. But the cost per page for the supertank inkjets is just so incredibly low. Because they don't use cartridges, there is no way for them to stop you from using third party ink. So 10 dollars of ink can literally print like 10,000 pages of black and white which is crazy inexpensive.

I'd say if reliability is your primary concern go laser. But if cost per print is your main concern, generic supertank ink is like an order of magnitude cheaper than toner for this laser printer.
