Never seen or used one of these, but after watching some videos and a few reviews, it seems like an expensive mixed bag. It's a simple device (no pump, just heater element with reservoir and a tube to expel the water onto your coffee grounds) that hardly seems to justify the price (especially the list price!). For being such a simple device, it's Achilles heel (according to reviews both good and not so good) is the tiny hole that water drips out of...it clogs easily. Also, you are limited in what cup you can use as it needs to fit on the stand/base.

It just seems it should be much cheaper considering the design is so basic. Everyone does say it makes a great cup of coffee but to be honest, I love the single cup of coffee I make in my $80 Ninja Pods & Grounds maker with my own coffee grounds and zero fuss or issues.

Can you rationally quantify the additional cost of a Mercedes when compared to a Honda?
They both get you where you need to go, but to some the experience in the Mercedes is worth the uplift.

It's hard to describe the pleasure of hearing a copper boiler fire up to make my coffee. I don't own this one but paid $230 or so for the one with a glass carafe over 3 years ago. Currently my total cost of ownership is $0.21 per day, and once the 5 year warranty is up I'll be at $0.12 per day. Well worth it to me.

I was fascinated by this company and coffeemaker and thus I went to gather information about it. It is from Netherlands and it is all handmade according to them. That explains the high price. They do make different styles and one has to pick and choose what they would like. I agree that price vs value seems kinda steep. But if you love coffee and when you compare with what Starbucks charge....

I would not be surprised if you're using a $20 bladed coffee grinder.

It's not just about the copper boiler. The key to an exceptionally great cup of drip coffee is maintaining a consistent water temperature from start to finish. Only a handful of drip machines are certified by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) and the European Coffee Brewing Centre (ECBC), and this one is among them. It is also completely handmade in Netherlands, rather than produced in the large manufacturing facilities commonly used in China. (YouTube: Moccamaster Factory Tour: How Drip Coffee Makers are made in Europe?)

I own two moccamaster but don't get the single cup version

I can't really notice either doing a bad job when I do a small amount compared to full load

Then it might surprise you I use a Kitchen Aid Pro Burr grinder.

Sounds like you're way deeper into the coffee experience than just a good-tasting cup of coffee, which I make with freshly roasted coffee ground every day when I make my cup. For me, paying a bit more for the best beans is worth more than the sound of a copper boiler firing up but to each their own.
