if you want just the dlc it goes on sale for $9-12 regularly. The ps4 disc has a free upgrade to ps5 (the dlc is pc/ps5 exclusive). The base ps4 game has been $5 in the past at stores.
it was a fun game but I found the original Zero Dawn to be more engaging. There's a ton of cameos from the first game and a large map but I just didn't like the weapons the same. They added good new mechanics like a glide unlock and an end game unlock that is improved upon in the dlc Burning Shores.

If you have target circle, check your discounts. I had a 20% off one item coupon, that I used on this. Another 5% off and free shipping if you use your target card. $22.79 plus tax after that.
The writing is so bad. They made the protagonist annoyed at everything and very condescending to male characters.
I have to agree. The writing isn't great and I found the story less engaging than the original Horizon Zero Dawn game. That's likely because they're planning a trilogy, so this middle story is weak by comparison. Gameplay wise, material farming is also way more annoying in Forbidden West as the random rate drop of certain items is super low.
Now, is it a bad game?
No.
Is it worth playing if you enjoyed the original?
Yes, despite it's flaws it is still fun. Just set your expectations correctly and you'll have fun.
As other mentioned, the writing and story was a big let down after the first game set such a high standard - it also ends at a strange place in the story. That being said, the game is visually beautiful, plays well, and expands on the gameplay mechanics from Zero Dawn.
The first game is much better overall, IMO, as I was captivated by the story. But, if you enjoyed the world, combat, exploring, etc. from the first, you will probably enjoy Forbidden West. If you just play for the story, YMMV.
The protagonist is dull as dishwater, but considering how she was raised in isolation sort of explains her lack of social skills. It wore a little thin in the second game tho. I'll be glad when we're done with the era of tough female characters that can't have a personality for some reason.
That said, this game is a step up in every way from the first game in terms of the gameplay. The exploration, combat, etc. is all a ton of fun. Def worth the $30.

Not sure how the story was a "step back". And yeah, it ends on a cliffhanger, but so did the first game.

I didn't think the story was as interesting or impactful as the first. I'm not sure if it was the nature of it being a cliffhanger that bothered me or not; I just remember feeling a sense of "that was it?".
I don't think the first game ended with a cliffhanger. There were some hints at things and unanswered questions. But, the main story was about Alloy finding out where she came from and how the world had become the way it was, both of which were answered.

You may want to watch that first game's ending on YouTube again, friend; it very much ends on a cliffhanger.
Tempted but it'd be at least 6 months before I got to it and I suspect the price will keep dropping...
I bought it in the summer for $40 and it's still sealed on the shelf (though I used a gift certificate that was expiring). But I doubt it will drop lower than $30 within the next year; PS Studios games haven't been dropping lower than that this gen (GoW Ragnarok is an anomaly).
