The balance shown in the app is an actual gc but it's like a bucket, similar to Amazon (not exactly but close).
When you run low, you can reload it using all kinds of methods including another gc. Popeyes app (unlike TB or KFC) is trying to prevent you from having a bunch of small balance gcs loaded in the app. There really isn't much difference between using a credit card to reload the balance directly vs. using a tiny gc balance + a credit card to complete a purchase. The amounts are so small....reload using round numbers.
Keep your physical gc (or the gc number) for the one you load in the app. Anytime you want to replenish it, go online using your browser to Popeyes.com and keep the gc (the balance in your app) reasonably full. It's not cashstar or some reload operation stealing your money, it's a restaurant so you'll get the benefits from your credit card. You'll trigger things, your choice. Right now I load $10 every few days to my Popeye's gc balance using my Fidelity card who wants me to make 50 transactions by the end of the year. I can probably do 10 with Popeye's without having to eat there more than once this year.
Not 100% flexible but not debilitating either.
