This game is surprisingly fun, likely even more so if you played the original Oregon trail. I bought it for switch on release. It's really good for picking up and playing half an hour or couple hours. It has several game modes that all fit really well together and let you play a complete experience in one session based on how much time you want to play.

As someone who grew up with the original and occasionally still plays it, I really haven't liked this newer version. One reason is it has a poorly implemented random events system (although, I haven't played it for over a year so maybe it's been fixed). One example of this was on a westward trek I forded a <2 foot deep river. One of my party members drowned and my wagon flooded. I'm not kidding. I had a couple back to back runs where all of my characters came down with various diseases or injuries (they mostly took turns) and more than half my party members randomly died.
I know it's a game, but the original was more in the edutainment category. This newest version has stepped back from the educational side and overly gamified everything.
For the record, the overall mortality rate on the Oregon Trail was about 6% (it could have been somewhat higher as estimates are hard to get). https://www.jstor.org/stable/44441831
