If you want digital AND want another game you can go the Nintendo voucher route for the cheapest price.

$100 (#4 $25) Nintendo GC = $90 at Costco

Buy a set of vouchers for two Nintendo games for $100. Upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 version for $10

Final price $55

Or $45 for the Switch one version.

Check the Nintendo site for list of voucher eligible games. Keep in mind the program is ending and the date to utilize vouchers is coming up soonish.

It's using a cartridge, it's expensive to manufacture. Plus, that's also part of the reason why N64 did poorly globally lol.
And Switch 2 cards are expensive too.

Cartridges are always more expensive than discs. Nintendo has been doing this for decades. So if you read video game history, Nintendo chooses this as its market strategy to keep especially its first party titles at premium prices for longer periods. Unfortunate, because the current tension within the international manufacturing chain, this market decision brought unexpected uncertainty and extra cost to manufacturing Switch's cartridges, which is not fair for the customers to be fully responsible for in my opinion.

The switch 1 version does look to be included in the voucher program;

Back then those cartridges were very expensive bespoke tech. Now Nintendo just throws games onto microSD cards lol

FYI for people who don't have a Costco I've been finding that all of the first party Nintendo Switch 2 games are available for under $60 on Ebay within days/weeks of release. I've gotten Donkey Kong and Pokemon both for about $55. So it sucks to be paying more than full price used to be (physical copies were always $49.99 in store at walmart) but I definitely feel better not paying $70 or $80. Plus Nintendo games hold their value well so I know that I can sell them for at least $30-$40 dollars if I want to thin out my collection.
**Wanted to clarify that I'm talking about brand new sealed copies. Haven't had any issues with either DK or Pokémon. Just make sure you're getting what you think you're getting before ordering. Definitely second guess any listing that is too good to be true and make sure you are buying the game not just the empty case.

Just FYI if you have a Walmart or Target nearby and they have a Switch 2 kiosk, they may have a playable 20-minute demo of the game. Just got back from Target to play it and was overall impressed. It starts at the beginning of the game, and the graphics and controls are great!

Everyone complains about price, as a whole, in a vacuum. But you all should be analyzing it in price per hour of entertainment. E.g., a standard movie is ~$15 (non matinee) for two hours. So $7.50/hour of enjoyment. Even at $70 (plus tax) and projecting the length to be ~20 hours, this game is ~$3.75/hour of entertainment. That's twice as efficient as seeing a movie! Perspective is key.
