This thread has been dramatically expanded to include a $2.99/month for a year offer, directly from HBO Max. You don't have to fool with the Amazon convolutions and issues. As I was trying to work out for myself, and glad i don't have to deal with the Amazon layer, plus it opens it up to non Amazon and non-fire stick people. I saw lots of pages of posts and sped on to the end, and I recommend you take a look there too and/or change the main post to include the latest info.
Hope this helps!

I went through the HBO Max on my iPhone. As long as you have a payment method in your wallet, I think you can get this. Just look for the alternative billing payment button. I can confirm that I did indeed get the $2.99 price for a year, billed through Apple, and that I can access it through the regular HBO Max app on my Roku TV.

FWIW, I had an account that expired in August. I signed into that account through the app on my iPad (not the website), got the message that I needed to resubscribe, and immediately saw the deal. I subscribed right away... Billing is through Apple.
Then I read some other comments about success on Amazon devices (including a tablet) but again, only through the app. So I tried on my Fire TV stick. I had to sign out of my account that I just renewed, and then chose the new subscription button. I immediately saw the offer again. (Screenshot 1)
Tried the same on my Roku and was just offered the standard subscription prices. (screenshot 2)
I also first tried this on my Android phone through the website and the app and wasn't shown the offer.
So 3rd party billing seems to be a factor - except for Android and Roku. And it doesn't seem that you need to be a previous subscriber. Hope that helps!
