I haven't looked at a video card in a bit. Is it common for video cards to only have 12GB of RAM in 2025?
12 GB VRAM simply isn't enough for a lot of serious AI work these days. Studio artists, researchers, and developers doing anything with large models almost always need 16–48 GB depending on the workflow
Nvidia course corrected giving "too much RAM" to the cards in the 30 and 40 series and that's why the 50 series cards have way less RAM. As we can see, this was a strategic blunder on Nvidia's part for the 50 cards, as even though they're more powerful chips they will still run out of vRAM if you play modern games on higher resolutions like 4K.
The scalper/cryptominer thing has pretty much come and gone, as all the consumer cards are made to be more difficult to mine. However, organic interest remains. New cards are indeed around the corner for the holiday season so you can gamble a sure bet like this versus playing "lottery" for the newer cards.
