its a decent player based on Mediatek chipset (like the UB450) but is lacking some of the features that more expensive Panasonic players like the UB420, UB820, and UB9000 have with their Panasonic chipsets.
Namely, this player does not have:

HDR Optimizer, which gives Dolby Vision-like adjustments for TVs that have lower peak brightness, even on HDR10-only content
Ability to move or change the intensity of subtitles
Various other minor Panasonic chipset QOL features

I have one (bought last BF) but haven't used it but a handful of times since we mostly stream, but I've taken an interest in 4K UHD discs as they look better and sound better than streaming. It's a very basic player and if you're not a big video enthusiast with an expensive setup, this player (I got it $109 last year open box like new from Amazon) works great.

I checked with Amazon Rufus: this player's remote control uses infrared tech ... a real downer in my opinion, especially since that's also what I use on an older model. The buttons are soft (don't click) and the remote has to be pointed directly at the IR sensor.

I know there's some discussion about game consoles not being good 4K Blu-ray disc players. Would you say this is an upgrade or better? Hoping you might know the answer.

This play doesn't have Dolby Visions and that feature makes a difference. But the good thing is at this price point you can find one that does.

Yeah, unfortunately I'm not a gamer so no clue. From what I've read, the game consoles would play 4K discs but may not support the advanced features like Dolby Vision, for example. If you just want to play 4K discs without the fuss and you want to game, then a console seems the best choice. I'm not sure a modern gaming console would be worse than this low-end player.
