This is a concrete breakdown of the cost structure for your scenario, using the AT&T terms as the explicit example since they were the most detailed in the Walmart document.
1. The Concrete Scenario & Assumptions
| Component | Detail |
|---|---|
| New Device | Apple iPhone 17 Pro |
| Trade-In Device | Apple iPhone 15 Pro |
| Carrier | AT&T |
| Trade-in Credit | $1,100 (Your iPhone 15 Pro qualifies for the maximum credit.) |
| Installment Term | 36 Months @ 0% APR |
| Assumed Retail Price (R) | $2,000.16 (This is the maximum retail price implied by the $55.56/mo max installment payment listed in the terms.) |
| Required Service Plan | AT&T Unlimited Starter SL (The minimum eligible unlimited voice and data plan listed in the terms). |
2. Upfront Costs (Due at Sale)
These are the immediate costs you must pay at the time of purchase, before the monthly billing begins.
| Upfront Cost | Calculation | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Sales Tax (Estimated) | 7% of Retail Price (R) (\$2,000.16 \times 0.07) | \approx \mathbf{\$140.01} |
| Activation/Upgrade Fee | AT&T standard fee | \mathbf{\$35.00} |
| Total Upfront Outlay | | \approx \mathbf{\$175.01} |
| Down Payment | $0 for well-qualified customers; others may be required to pay. | \mathbf{\$0 \text{ to } \text{Variable}} |
3. Monthly Financial Breakdown (36 Months)
Your final monthly bill will consist of your subsidized device payment and your carrier service plan cost.
| Monthly Item | Calculation | Monthly Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Full Device Installment | \$2,000.16 / 36 months | \$55.56 |
| Monthly Bill Credit | \$1,100 / 36 months | -\$30.56 |
| Net Device Payment | (This is your out-of-pocket device cost) | \mathbf{\$25.00} |
| Service Plan Cost | AT&T Unlimited Starter SL (for a single new line, per terms) | \mathbf{\$75.99} |
| Estimated Total Monthly Bill | (Device + Service Plan) + Taxes & Fees | \mathbf{\$100.99} + \text{Taxes/Fees} |
The Plan: The calculation is based on the AT&T Unlimited Starter SL plan, which is the carrier's entry-level unlimited plan. It provides:
* Unlimited talk, text, and data in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
* It meets your 5G/talk/text requirement by offering unlimited data (but note that speeds may be temporarily slowed by AT&T during network congestion).
4. Final Net Cost and Value
| Summary Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Total Net Device Cost | (\$25.00/\text{mo.} \times 36 \text{ mos.}) = \mathbf{\$900.00} |
| Upfront Cash Outlay | \approx \$175.01 (Tax/Fee) |
| Incentive Gift Card | -\mathbf{\$300} (Walmart e-Gift Card) |
| Total Value Received | \mathbf{\$1,400} |
Your iPhone 17 Pro will cost you a total of \approx \$900 (over 3 years) plus the upfront tax and activation fee, and you get a $300 Walmart gift card back. This does not include the mandatory cost of the wireless service plan ($75.99/mo + tax/fees) for 36 months.
you get less value for your phone than just selling it, you are locked to 36 month contract to even get your bill credits, all on some overpriced $80 line. i pay $10 / month for my phone bill and save enough to buy 3 new phones in the time this 36 month contract ends.
the only decent part here is that you can get the gift card and then pay off the phone, but its hardly a deal.

In short!, The $830 trade-in value is a Verizon promotional offer available only when upgrading directly through Verizon. The $90 value through Walmart reflects the standard trade-in value, not the promotional credit. This difference is due to how and where the upgrade and trade-in are processed.
I went and asked on Verizon support line and they added a deal to my account to get up to $1100 in credits with trade-in of my iphone 12 to any iphone. Better deal. Didn't even have to have Ultimate plan.

- Note: Offer valid for new customers and existing customers adding a new line to their account (device upgrades on existing lines are not eligible).
This bullet point was in OP's description. I read the terms and conditions and don't see this verbiage for AT&T- Purchase Requirements: Eligible smartphone must be purchased and remain on a qualifying 0% APR 36-month installment plan with monthly payments of up to $55.56. $0 down is available for well-qualified customers; others may require a down payment. Other installment options may vary by account type. Customers must pay tax on full retail price and an activation/upgrade fee of $35 per line.
- Eligible Plans: The offer requires a postpaid unlimited voice and data plan starting at $75.99/mo. before discounts if new customer for single line of AT&T Unlimited Starter SL; plus, taxes and fees. AT&T may temporarily slow data speeds if the network is busy. AT&T 55+, Value Plus, Value Plus VL, and Value Plus Unlimited plans are not eligible. See att.com/unlimited for current unlimited plans.
I done the Walmart GC Deal on two separate Black Fridays and it was always an upgrade, never adding any line to my account. Is this a TYPO?Leave a Comment
