If you get the Deck LCD, just be aware that the 256GB SSD really needs replaced if you're installing any modern games. 256GB can be completely used up with an installation of something like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Baldur's Gate 3. 100GB+ installations are really common for AAA games now, so make sure to check the storage requirements for games you intend on playing since that SSD is quite small. Fortunately, the upgrade process is very easy, and larger 512GB / 1TB / 2TB 2230 SSDs are readily available, but be aware that the upgrade process takes a little bit of technical know-how, with plenty of guides online for the process. Alternatively, you can expand storage with a quality MicroSD card, although this is quite a bit slower than storage on the NVMe, particularly when applying big patches to games. I recommend Samsung's MicroSD cards for reliability purposes. Avoid TeamGroup like the plague. SanDisk is a good alternative.
If you don't need the space, the Steam Deck is a great emulation platform. EmuDeck makes it easy to get going, and 256GB is plenty of space for emulation, or simpler games.
Is there something you need more for life?
Do you travel often enough where the portability would be useful?
Are there other hobbies you're interested in trying?
$300 could get you:
A Bambu Lab 3D printer.
A good set of Ryobi tools.
A top of the line e-reader.
All kinds of beefy campaign board games, like Gloomhaven etc.
It'll be this price again. There's no reason to "just do it" if you're conflicted.

Some may say the higher res is worse for the battery, and that's probably true on the windows model, but the larger battery from my limited testing has similar battery life to LCD stock and either could be better with the DeckyTDP plugin to manually tweak it depending on the game.
The weight is slightly heavier (70g increase), but the ergonomics are much comfier than the Steam Deck, so it's less fatiguing over time. To me the grips can be described like so: the Legion is Xbox-like, so your wrist is angled more outwards. The Steam Deck is a bit different, and the feeling is more like your wrist is twisted a little inwards, so it's a little awkwards, but usable. The triggers are also dual-mode, so they can be in a low-travel button style mode or switched to regular analog.
The sticks are hall effect so they are much less likely to have drift, and there is a second USB-C port so you can charge and connect a second accessory (such as a USB headset) at the same time. It runs the exact same version of SteamOS that the Deck does so everything you know and love is still there, the desktop mode, plugins, etc but its officially supported by Valve, not a community offshoot like Bazzite.
The biggest thing for me is the charging speed. I'm surprised no one mentions this, even though it makes sense since some people just do pick up and play then drop it on a dock. If you're like me and you do p&p and are busy so you forget to charge, the Deck is low battery the next day, so you have a smaller window of time to play since the LCD Deck takes an abysmal amount of time to charge(close to 3 hours from zero to 100). Even getting up to 50 takes some time. I've read that the OLED model is more reasonable and closer to the typical 1.5 hours, but the LCD model is brutal.
The Legion Go S is dramatically better with 65% in 30 minutes, which has changed the way I use the device almost as much as SteamOS on the Deck changed the experience compared to Windows handhelds that didn't have FSE until recently. If you want more performance, you can take the chip up to higher TDP levels, like 33W but that will heavily decrease battery life though I'd rather have the option than not.
If you use your device for local streaming (such as Moonlight/Sunshine or Steam Link) the higher res screen and WiFi 6E chip also help improve the connection over the already low latency on the Steam Deck.
TLDR: The Legion Go S is essentially a Steam Deck 2 and improves on it in nearly every way.

Even then with Paypal discount and taking into account open box models that are basically just new, it's only about $50 more with all these improvements, including more storage OOTB. Now if the 64GB version went on sale or the refurbs were more readily available that would be a different story.

The price has gone up $30 recently, but just yesterday they were at the prices listed in the post. It wasn't like the S25U deal where you had to do tricks to get the price, it was there for close to 3 full days which is a good in terms of a Slickdeal. Assuming the excellent condition Go S for $395 before tax compared to $319 for 256GB LCD SD before tax you would get to $255 for the SD and $316 for the Legion Go. So yeah I missed $10 but it's only a $60 difference. If you already have a Steam Deck it's not worth upgrading but for a newcomer they should just skip the Deck and go straight to the Go S.
Edit: my links weren't even the main ones lol there are a ton of those posts so I got confused, dunno how you can miss that but just search for Legion Go S and you'll find more.

Why don't I make a crappy price and bait comment without considering external factors too:
The Steam Deck is $320 vs the $450 Legion Go S. There's no reason to even consider the 3 year old Deck. It has large bezels, poor battery life, and a crappy screen. Why buy a handheld at all when the screen is trash, it takes 10 years to charge, and the screen is worse than my 5 year old phone.
