FYI, but a new Apple TV was supposed to launch soon, at least according to rumors. https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/apple-tv/
This is NOT a recommendation for or against buying one, but rather a heads up just so that no one is surprised IF the new model is released shortly after making a purchase.

All of the things you hate about it are the reason I was happy to pay a premium for it. It's extremely fast for a smart TV box and doesn't have any junk like branded buttons or ads on screen. The only reason I don't have them on all my TVs yet is because of the rumored updated version but that rumor has been going on so long that I might just grab these at this price

Once you understand that you cannot claim those three months if you had claimed them previously with another Apple product, it doesn't.

I heard this was cancelled. Someone did an analysis and found Apple rarely does a new product announcement the second half of November or December. If they did release a new version, Costco has a 90 day return policy for electronics so either way maybe it's safe to buy.

Wish Apple allowed sideloading. Instant buy if that was the case.
just download 3rd party app and play it (e.g. Plex etc.)

Doesn't any better than this when it comes to streaming.
Best interface
Best transfer rate of A/V
Even if you don't like Apple products, nobody else's streaming devices come close.

It's a terrible process, but there is actually official sideloading on tvOS. You have to reinstall every week (or bribe Apple by paying $100/year, IIRC, and then you can only reinstall once a year I think).

But, yes, Apple's awful attitude about letting me install my own software kills a lot of their products for me too.

I.domt get the appeal. You can get a minipc and a remote and you are golden. get everything and more. What's the point of $100 unitasker?
I used to think that way about unitaskers but sometimes you just want the thing to work without much friction. With a mini PC you may need a keyboard with trackpad built in. And have to open a web browser to navigate to whatever content you want. Also if you have a guest over they have to learn how to use your set up but if you hand them a remote it's easy for them to navigate without much help

I literally bought 2 last time they were at this price. One at Costco and one at Best Buy. After trying desperately to force myself to like them, I returned the Costco one. Still have the other. It's basically brand new and still in its box for months now, after multiple attempts to try and like it when I first got it. Didn't work with continue watching with Netflix. Doesn't support live TV unless you use an app (ie no free google tv channels, no dvr compatibility with YTTV). I bought a silicone remote condom for it within a couple of days because the remote is too angular. No quick buttons on the remote to load streaming apps. The only appeal of it is aesthetic with the much vaunted "buttery smooth" interface, which is completely moot since you use that 1% of the time to simply select an app and then you're watching a show and it's absolutely irrelevant. Disrecommended. I got an Onn Plus 4K, installed Projectivy and haven't looked back.
First of all it is not a product for your use, it is made for those we want quality in whatever is available thru the product not as much the features at the compromise of quality within what is available and for them nothing could beat it.

Bought this 2x from Costco thinking that I'd like it and couldn't deal with the remote - no tactile feel, and using in a dark room no fun. My shield allows me to watch YT commercial free with Smartube and I also use my Roku for my other streaming services - remote much better feeling IMHO.

This is tempting but I'm still happy with my 2017 1st gen 4k model. Is there any significant reason to upgrade?

The only thing I can think of is a better remote, but my TV remote can be used with the Apple TV so that's not an issue really.

I have a Gen 2 and it still is somewhat viable but was waiting on this deal.
