I need a cheap laptop for school, but I can't stand HP. Something is always amiss with their laptops if you use them often. The first thing that goes is the adapter. I swear you have to replace them yearly, sometimes more than once.

I think that was the problem. There was no option for CSM in the EFI, and Windows 7 was not willing to install to a GPT drive.

I hadn't built a computer in years, and I wasn't very familiar with most of this at the time. Honestly, I don't understand the functional difference between GPT and MBR, But I do understand this was a precursor in order to install the operating system.
The bigger issue is without a BIOS, W7 is dead in the water; formatting a disk is trivial.
A workaround for that is here: https://www.prime-expert.com/flashboot/ but it's not for the faint of heart, and of course it's unsupportable.
My bigger question is why one would want W7 if W8 (or W11) is installable?

I have this, bought from Newegg thru Ebay two months ago for ~$221, only difference is mine came with 32gb RAM. It's actually shipped by a Newegg vendor in Connecticut. It has a usb-c charging port; mine came with a lighted keyboard and a fingerprint reader. The bluetooth and fingerprint reader needed to be activated thru bios. The laptop has nice sound; no camera. Screen isn't super bright, so not ideal for outside use.

I had an issue with the unit coming with one bad RAM chip (it came with 2 x16GB removable) that was not passing MEMTEST. The vendor shipped replacement RAM out without any issues, and it's been working great.

I'm really happy with the build quality and overall really like the laptop.
How is the battery life and can you check the battery cycle count by running in cmd prompt: "powercfg /batteryreport"

Would it work? Yes.
Would it be enough for an always-fast experience: Probably not.
Would it be enough for a child up to teen years? Easily.

When you're talking about laptop brands, it depends on which product line you have. Laptops sold at Walmart or Best Buy for $300 are different from laptops built for businesses.
In this particular deal, HP Elitebook is under their business line and should have solid built quality.

Just got an email stating it was OOS & that they purchase these in bulk & cannot assure the specific laptop as indicated. I replied that I have no interest if not as stated & to credit my PayPal account if it was debited.

Got mine today. The chassis is brand new. Backlit kb, webcam. Battery TBD - arrived with no charge. One stuck pixel (white) on the LCD that I'm trying to fix with Jscreenfix. Very happy with the build quality.

Just got mine today. The power charger and trackpad/keyboard seem to be new. I noticed there is some skin on the top cover. Are you supposed to remove that grainy texture?

Got mine a few days ago.

There's a round button in the middle of the keyboard (to control the mouse?) but is missing the cover for it. Does anyone know what that button is called? Wonder if I should try to get a replacement button cover or leave it as is.

Other than the missing button cover, it works great so far.

Check your battery health using something like G helper. The one in mine is showing 73.9% health. Pretty bad but otherwise the rest of it besides the side peeling off. I wonder if this is a skin that is used as part of the refurb process to hide the scratches from the previous owners.

Got the laptop today. Exterior case is clean and the screen is clear and plenty bright. Small plastic part is cracked where the fan vent is located but is hidden by the hinge. Has a working webcam and a camera privacy cover. Power adapter appears new and the cord was neatly wrapped but the brick label is missing so it is a plain brick without any branding or labels. I ran "powercfg /batteryreport" in a powershell window and the battery cycle count came back as 3. Original HP battery with a date 2022/02/08. Design capacity 53015mWh but full charge capacity 41453mWh. Possibly refurbished with a new old stock battery pack. The Kensington lock appears to have been used and attached to something in its former life.

Happy with this purchase at $192. Been using a work issued HP 840G7 for a few years so I am pretty comfortable with this size.
