Some people believe Mac has bad I/O. They kinda forget Apple even before Steve Jobs came back fixed that. It was only cheap models from 1994-1997 really that had I/O issues.

Early FireWire and USB drives also got their limits pushed on Mac but that wasn't Apple's fault.

Apple co-developed Thunderbolt and USB-C, which led to USB4 merging both.

As long as the enclosure uses the ASM2464PD chipset and you get the firmware on it up to date, different USB4 enclosures would perform identically...except for cooling which would be more on the design of the enclosure and presence or lack of fan.

I got this when it was on sale last time for $85. Absolutely beast of an enclosure. Been going strong as my main drive for my Mac mini for almost 6 months with no hiccups. I'm tempted to get another for my 4K blu-ray rips.

For a 40 Gbs enclosure it's the best you can get. Sure you can pay $20 for an enclosure that doesn't nearly utilize the speed of a drive, but for best performance in it's class this is the one.

Oh I see, thanks for the feedback and additional insight. I never been opposed to OWC's offering since I already own 2x of their external enclosures, the OWC Mercury Elite Pro 7200 RPM Storage Enclosure, which contain a 16TB and 18TB HDD in them respectively.

Thinking about trying this vs my Santechi dock which is throwing an error message that so far their support has been unable to resolve.

This and a more standard USB-C hub wouldn't be quite as 'elegant' but if it functionally works better than it would be worth it.

Before you buy ANY TB4 or USBC4 enclosure you need to verify it has a fully compliant controller. Most of these things are lying about their support/speed and the controller is what dictates that. Here is a handy guide: https://dancharblog.wordpress.com...sets-2022/

TL;DR you want a ASM2464PD/JHL9440 or better. The controller needs to have some way to sink the heat as well (like to the enclosure) or it will be a bad experience with at best slow file move operations but at worst data loss/corruption.

Thats not true. With m1 mac I have problem of kernel panic at least every month with continuous read write. Fine for moat people but not my use case.

No way lol. There are maybe 2 ways it's true.
Large file transfers where max BW is more drive dependent, or mac mini thermal throttling the SSD inside
Otherwise for 4k rand read low queue depth, the internal will win

Now if I can find the WD 8TB SSD for around $500 again, I'll be set for a while before I buy any more SSDs and enclosures.

i was thinking the same thing but I guess because it's usb4, probably has a top class chipset, and seems to be quite adequately cooled.


maybe also sprinkle in a little bit of brand tax too. OWC seems to be a fan favorite in the Mac community.
