Some people believe Mac has bad I/O. They kinda forget Apple even before Steve Jobs came back fixed that. It was only cheap models from 1994-1997 really that had I/O issues.

Early FireWire and USB drives also got their limits pushed on Mac but that wasn't Apple's fault.

Apple co-developed Thunderbolt and USB-C, which led to USB4 merging both.

As long as the enclosure uses the ASM2464PD chipset and you get the firmware on it up to date, different USB4 enclosures would perform identically...except for cooling which would be more on the design of the enclosure and presence or lack of fan.

Here's a good blog describing the chipsets
https://dancharblog.wordpress.com...sets-2022/

Here's a link to the ASM2464PD firmware - if you already have any enclosure with this chipset, you can update and fix disconnect issues if you're having them.

Here's a link to an enclosure with the same ASM2464PD chipset for half the price - 40Gbps

I got this when it was on sale last time for $85. Absolutely beast of an enclosure. Been going strong as my main drive for my Mac mini for almost 6 months with no hiccups. I'm tempted to get another for my 4K blu-ray rips.

Good price but wondering if the owc express 1m2 80g will go on sale. It's twice as fast (in theory anyway).
You read my mind. Would love to get the 80g on sale to pair with a mac studio.

i was thinking the same thing but I guess because it's usb4, probably has a top class chipset, and seems to be quite adequately cooled.

maybe also sprinkle in a little bit of brand tax too. OWC seems to be a fan favorite in the Mac community.
Of course. I delve in both Windows and macOS so I understand. I actually own a couple of OCW enclosures myself:

That enclosure at half the price has active cooling, and likely includes a REALLY annoying fan at that. The OWC is very good, but the UGREEN uses the same chipset and looks strikingly familiar, all the while being cheaper than the OWC on sale. FWIW I have the OWC and it runs read/writes 24/7, - zero issues.

Owc is great for macos. But no external enclosure runs reliable on macos 24 x 7 read write.
I've got several external drives that would counter your statement. Including a 2TB SanDisk that is my primary downloads / torrents drive, that is active 24/7/365. I should point out that it's connected directly to my Mac. But I do have several USB drives through a hub, as well. But at clients, whenever they have unreliable external drives, they are usually connected through a hub. Always best to have avoid a hub whenever possible. Also make sure that the cable you're using to connect the drive is truly a data cable and is as short as possible for the job. I've found that longer cables are unreliable for USB3+ speeds.

I am getting kernel panic with owc enclosure. Maybe its the read and write sre too intense all the time.

Your computer should simply take the amount of data it needs, at the rate it asks for it. To my knowledge, It's not possible for a storage device to be 'too intense.' Have you tried running Disk Utility repair on the drive? If that doesn't work, I would try reformatting the drive.

I think its driver issue, the ssd runs perfectly on linux desktop when put on mobo

You didnt say which enclosure, which cables you use and which NVME you use.
I have this 1M2 and it is rock solid 24/7 with the WD850x and runs cool.

ive read this like 3 times and I still have a hard time understanding
They're saying that it's not a good idea (generally) to run a regularly-used drive, exclusively externally. Most enclosures are not intended for always-connected daily operation*.

Personally, I believe this one is an exception. It has much more thermal mass, and surface area than most enclosures, most MacProfessionals are limited to external drives, and OWC specializes in marketing to that userbase.

This is much more expensive than most NVMe enclosures but, you do get something for that price increase.

*Most 'cheapie' NVMe enclosures can be modified for long-term operation.
'Thermal Putty' or 'Thermal Pads' must be added between the (usually Realtek) USB-NVMe bridge chip and the metal drive enclosure.
Do note though: If your given NVMe drive cannot dissipate its heat, the entire enclosure will (eventually) reach unsafe operating temperatures in long/large continuous read-write operations.

So I was looking at getting this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GKFH...dp_it&th=1
To plug into my 4K player to load with kid cartoons instead of usb sticks, if you catch my drift matey!
Does anyone have any recommendations for this task?

I have the one with a fan and the sound isn't overly loud.

Here's one even cheaper without a fan. Same ASM2464pd chipset with updatable firmware.

Unless OWC is writing their own firmware for ASM2464 chipset, all these enclosures perform the same.

More than likely. Thermals will be the differentiating factor, but I cannot handle those tiny, whiny fans. Pretty much all the negative reviews of that fan-based enclosure complain about the noisy fan. No thank you!

Been very happy with the OWC for many months now, and it runs 24/7 connected to an M4 Pro Mac mini.

Thats not true. With m1 mac I have problem of kernel panic at least every month with continuous read write. Fine for moat people but not my use case.
One panic per month is hard to pin down, but it could easily be a chipset conflict with the NVMe blade.

Or it could be a poor/bad chipset. Lot of discussion on that.

Bottom line, it's not the Mac. It's that you are using bleeding edge PCIe Cable I/O in the latest USB standard. One panic per month is considered minimal, especially historically.
