How old is that tv that can't pick up OTA signals? Maybe the issue is the signals.
If she doesn't have Internet at all, call 911. https://www.instagram.c

A few things to keep in mind. There's a new standard out called ATSC 3.0. For the most part, this isn't commonplace, but broadcasters are trying really hard to make this a thing for encryption purposes. It makes it harder for people to setup DVR with OTA channels, but it doesn't look likely to become a standard soon. It would be advisable to check if a new TV you're buying has that so it doesn't become a potential headache down the road. You'd have to buy a converter box.
Use this to see if your MIL is in range of any channels to begin with:

This TV shouldn't have a problem picking up OTA channels as long as you live in a place that has good signal and you have the right antenna (preferably outdoor).
This TV also has composite inputs so a DVD player shouldn't be a problem.

My recommendation would be to turn off data collection settings and adjust picture settings based on rtings or similar suggestions.
Lastly, last night I reached out to Bestbuy and got price matched to current price as I bought with them directly.
How much storage comes with? 8gb is not enough to run a tuner on top of the fire os IMHO..
Fire OS has become far more undesirable as of late.
Amerzons #3 smart tv os is on the slide down the list since it offers no redeeming features, only adds and tracking..

I'm more curious about the OS. FireTVs typically just load to the Amazon home screen and have no clue if their basic remotes allow for input switching, so she would also need a universal remote
No HDMI (many DVD players)
