I usually have a large mounted TV in my patio but takes a beating with Texas heat. This might be the answer. Super light and take it out only when needed.

MIL has an old tv that can't pick up OTA signals, if she doesn't have Internet at all and just will use for OTA and hooking up a dvd player, would this still work ok? I've never had a fire TV, with it not being online at all, not sure how well the OS would work?

No HDMI (many DVD players)

How old is that tv that can't pick up OTA signals? Maybe the issue is the signals.

If she doesn't have Internet at all, call 911. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DJQMnYVP9sz/

I can't imagine an old TV would have problems picking up signal when it's the job of the antenna to do that. Unless she has a TV from like 2000, pre-digital era, then I doubt that is the problem. If that were the case, she wouldn't have been getting any channels for the last 10+ years.

A few things to keep in mind. There's a new standard out called ATSC 3.0. For the most part, this isn't commonplace, but broadcasters are trying really hard to make this a thing for encryption purposes. It makes it harder for people to setup DVR with OTA channels, but it doesn't look likely to become a standard soon. It would be advisable to check if a new TV you're buying has that so it doesn't become a potential headache down the road. You'd have to buy a converter box.

Use this to see if your MIL is in range of any channels to begin with:

This TV shouldn't have a problem picking up OTA channels as long as you live in a place that has good signal and you have the right antenna (preferably outdoor).

This TV also has composite inputs so a DVD player shouldn't be a problem.

We have a larger version of this at the office and Its fine for screen sharing and has all of the standard connections. The display quality and colors are not the best but for $100 what do you expect?

I pulled the trigger on this one for my girlfriend. She has an old Insignia 40" non smart TV that she has an older fire stick attached to. Slow as hell, and I don't even know if the TV is 1080p. Maybe. However, I figured for $99 and the 2yr protection... For $128 total with tax, it was a steal. Not only is it 43", it should be much faster UI wise and she won't need the fire stick attached to it. either.

I bought this TV in oct 2nd week at $130 and used it only once. My main idea was to use it as a monitor for my office work@home. Picture clarity is good and decent enough to the price. No complaints. Only issue is FireTV so much deep into Amazon everything is tightly coupled with their services and advertisements.
My recommendation would be to turn off data collection settings and adjust picture settings based on rtings or similar suggestions.
Lastly, last night I reached out to Bestbuy and got price matched to current price as I bought with them directly.

Are these now the same OS as the Firestick plus (non sideloading, Linux based)? Apps are wonky on the Linux versions.

How much storage comes with? 8gb is not enough to run a tuner on top of the fire os IMHO..

Fire OS has become far more undesirable as of late.

Amerzons #3 smart tv os is on the slide down the list since it offers no redeeming features, only adds and tracking..

Her tv is like 20 years old. She lives in an area with lots of OTA signal, antenna works fine at neighbors, same antenna won't work on hers. I think in 2009ish there was an analog to digital switch, I'm thinking her tv predates that and could be the issue.
I'm more curious about the OS. FireTVs typically just load to the Amazon home screen and have no clue if their basic remotes allow for input switching, so she would also need a universal remote
