I've had one of these for years and have always really liked it. But unless you really want to use the gaming features, I would just get the ONN model that was here on FP a while ago. It was about $50 and I am basically just as satisfied with it. The Nvidia does have a spectacular remote but the ONN one is pretty good too.

This is the 2019 Pro version, so it's 6 years old and still the king of streaming boxes.

This site is called SLICKdeals; and 15% off a streaming box from 6+ years ago, with only 16GB of storage and 3GB of RAM, is not a deal. I don't care what anybody says.

Every year this deal hits, and every year I debate pulling the trigger. I keep sitting out hoping for a new version with updated tech; if even 300$, that would be my purchase. Alas, another year on the sidelines for me.

runs 4 screens on tivimate flawlessly. Something the FS Max couldn't handle.

i have two of these. recommend installing projectivity launcher to get rid of ads and remove bloat.

https://www.androidpolice.com/how...tolerable/

i also use sunshine on the pc and stream games to moonlight on the shield onto the 85" tv for couch gaming in hdr.

don't try to use shield as a plex server. it works but too many problems especially if you try to play from it at the same time. other than that, it does work good as a client. much better off getting a n100 minipc with plexpass for plex server. a dedicated plex server can do so much more including running a media stack with all the *arr apps, home assistant, etc.

it is also good for retro game emulation scene if you're into that. one thing that its missing though is hdr in youtube.

Does not! Newest apple tv is 1/2 the price and double the experience.
Apple TV doesn't allow sideloading. So there's that....

This morning after I saw this deal I bought another and opened up my 5 year old shield and blew it out and added some new noctua thermal paste.
It's amazing how much more advanced the shield is today then other devices

Overpriced for what it is nowadays. Remember the bundles with a HDD and game controller?

Onn needs to step up their game and build a proper competitor for the nvidia shield at ~$100, it would sell like hot cakes...
Nvidia would lower the price or maybe make a new version if the Shield had any legitimate competition. An updated chip, HDMI 2.1, and wifi 6 (or 7) would be fantastic.

The Plex and home server streaming crowd love this device but for the vast majority, an Apple TV has a better user experience. I own both devices and while I like the quality for both video and sound that the Shield Pro can output, the user experience just isn't there compared to Apple. NVIDIA has no interest in releasing an updated unit because they make bank on AI right now, so this product is an afterthought. But apparently it still sells well enough for them to keep making it.

Downvote me all you want, but the latest Apple TV 4K (WiFi + Ethernet) for $99 is a better deal for anyone who is not a Plex / Jellyfin / or other home server user. Which is most people.
People who aren't power users would find an even better deal in the $50 Onn box.

I wish I could say the same. I've had mine since 2017 and past few months one of them has started to get slow. It takes a couple minutes to respond when starting up now. It's time that they increase the memory and storage capacity on these. I agree that the quality is sound, but the fact that the RAM and the storage is on the low side is starting to show on those who are heavy users and have a lot of apps downloaded on it. I am using USB drives for additional storage but wish it was on board and not through a drive.
A lot of people (myself included) find that a repaste helps immensely. The thermal paste dries out overtime so frequently the slowdown people see is from overheating.

The device is from 2015 repackage in 2017 and 2019. No change in hardware.
Why do people feel the need to comment on things that they clearly know nothing about?..

The 2019 Pro uses the updated Nvidia Tegra X1+ CPU, Bluetooth 5.0, supports Dolby Vision, AI upscaling, plus the new remote. It's also in a much smaller form factor case compared to the previous pro models, plus it no longer has the SD card slot or IR receiver that it's predecessors did.

If you would've bought it years ago (for the same price) you could've been using it all this time.

Worrying about a new version just around the corner when it comes to tech means you'll never buy anything, because there's always going to be a new version EVENTUALLY.

I have 6 shields, 2 of these, and 4 of the older model (but very similar). I've just recently installed projectivity after using some other launcher for many years. Projectivity has brought new life to my shields. My setup looks sweet, tivimate, stremio, jellyfin, tizentube, and es-de are all fantastic apps. Just discovered es-de on android tv, and while it's been a bitch to configure (network drive roms, syncthing to share media artwork and settings between them) it works so well with retroarch. I just love playing Wave Race 64. Getting scrcpy installed and running was essential for getting 6 of these configured correctly. Love my shield tvs!

There is no need as 8k movies is the only thing that will make the shield obsolete.
But good luck with that
