I've had one of these for years and have always really liked it. But unless you really want to use the gaming features, I would just get the ONN model that was here on FP a while ago. It was about $50 and I am basically just as satisfied with it. The Nvidia does have a spectacular remote but the ONN one is pretty good too.

This is the 2019 Pro version, so it's 6 years old and still the king of streaming boxes.

Original model dropped in 2015 and the latest version(very different from OM) in 2019. And it is still the best media player. I have 4 of them in every room with tv/projector. 3g ram while very low nowdays but i dont encounter any problems
In every room you say? So does my older brother, lol... He actually bought me one for my b-day since he loves them so much so s/o to him.

Anyone considering apple tv because you are a apple fanboy Where Apple TV falls short (vs Shield) — what it may miss Audio limitations: If your movies use lossless or high-end audio codecs — for example, Dolby TrueHD + Dolby Atmos (common in Blu-ray remuxes or MKV rips) — Apple TV's Plex client often can't passthrough those natively. Instead, Plex must transcode (or downmix) the audio — so you lose the "pure" audio track or Atmos metadata. MKV / container & format support is tricky: There are multiple reports of MKV files failing to play via Plex on Apple TV (i.e. they spin forever), while converting to MP4 sometimes fixes the issue. HDR / advanced video + container combo issues: For certain high-bitrate 4K remuxes, special HDR formats, or uncommon audio + video combinations, Apple TV + Plex sometimes struggle — especially compared to Shield, which tends to handle "everything" more reliably. Dependence on your media's codec/container: With Apple TV, you often need your Plex library to be "well-behaved" (HEVC/H.264 + compatible audio + MP4 or supported container). Wildcard remuxed Blu-rays or MKVs with lossless audio are more likely to need transcoding or fail playback.
I use infuse on Appletv 4K. I haven't run into any playback issues at all across all my MKVs

The Plex and home server streaming crowd love this device but for the vast majority, an Apple TV has a better user experience. I own both devices and while I like the quality for both video and sound that the Shield Pro can output, the user experience just isn't there compared to Apple. NVIDIA has no interest in releasing an updated unit because they make bank on AI right now, so this product is an afterthought. But apparently it still sells well enough for them to keep making it.Downvote me all you want, but the latest Apple TV 4K (WiFi + Ethernet) for $99 is a better deal for anyone who is not a Plex / Jellyfin / or other home server user. Which is most people.
I use AppleTV and Infuse. It plays everything from my home server with no issues. If people haven't tried this setup they really should. It's by far the best streamer user experience

I do this as well but even with Infuse the Apple TV does not properly passthrough all audio codecs.

No thanks. I'll stick with my Apple TV 4K 128GB; the ACTUAL best streaming device on the market. One that makes sense, hardware and value wise, heading into 2026.
I'll prefer the freedom to sideload any APP I want and not what Apple wants me to watch! 🫡

I have 3 it's not a fluke. It lags just switching the tabs across the top. The shop doesn't hitch the whole UI when you tab over it? Keyboard doesn't take a second or few to pop up when you try to search sometimes? Settings menu doesn't take a few seconds to open and poplulate? It doesn't ever hitch when scrolling through lists or thumbnails? I really doubt it. It may generally be "snappy" but it's covered with lots of hitching and random lag everywhere in the UI. Just on the home screen with no apps open it drops frames and lags on all of them. I need to see a video.

Other people with lag:

Upgraded firmwares. Reset. Still laggy UI that hitches randomly.
Clean it from any dust/debris, replace the thermal past. Factory Reset and Boom! New Device!

The first unit I rec'd from Amazon was defective -- randomly crashed and rebooted every time it was put under load (like loading its own settings to uninstall apps...). Contacted Nvidia for an RMA and they were quick to get me a working unit! Had to manually enable CEC for the remote to work with my soundbar's volume (IR had some issues) but I like the remote and that it's pretty easy to remap buttons.

Only issue is that I had Plex fail to load a file that works on Mobile/PC which kind of defeats the point of getting the Shield... was hoping it would just work vs my CCWGTV which goes farking crazy when fed certain audio formats. Are there settings I need to tweak?
