Any pros to this over Bitwarden apart from better UI?

They know their software is really good so they hook you in with a little deal like this and then you're stuck. They never give us existing subscribers a break. I dread the day that they will bump prices and I have to switch to some alternative.

When I did a side by side test last year, Bitwarden was a lot worse at autofill on mobile. Core functionality is pretty comparable, just lots of little convenience use cases where 1pw does a better job.

The biggest issue is having my data in the cloud. I just want a password manager that syncs locally with my PC. I don't need autofill, I just need to be able to look up data.

If you reach out to their support, they'd give you a deal, not sure if its 50% but at least 30%.

Not sure about bitwarden, but 1 pass allows (afaik) an unlimited number of shared vaults among the family. I have one for me and my wife, one for wife/kid/me, one for me at the (octagenarian) parents, and one for me and the in-laws. Plus, the recovery data for all accounts is in my safety deposit box. The UI is easy enough for my mother (rolled a 3 for IT competence) to use with minimal assistance.

You should look into keepass. It's been a few years since I tried it, but I suspect it will do what you need. The UI is suited only to those with 15+ years in AS/360 and a MS in computer science or back end information systems design and, afaik, requires a DVORAK keyboard with no keycap labels, but those who've audited the code say it's better than 80% likely to not be compromised. (they said that about truecrypt, too, but maybe this is the lucky side of that probability).

Take a look at KeepassDX for your mobile and KeepassXC for your computer, both are open source, stored locally and work well together ... and they are free.

You can go with 1Password because of their great software, but you really go with 1Password because of their unique security model.

Enabling 2FA and using a security key are great protections for logging into your account.

But they require the vendor to implement them securely and they don't protect your account from a data breach at the vendor. That goes for 1Password, too.

What sets 1Password apart from all other password managers is the use of the Secret Key that's generated when you create your account.

It's required when accessing your vault from a new device because it's required to unlock your vault.

So even if 1Password has a data breach or your master password is super weak, the Secret Key is mixed with your password in order to be able to decrypt your vault, and no one is getting around that.

That's why you go with 1Password over Bitwarden, Apple, or any of the others, paid or free.
