So, ignore manufacturer's recommendation and abide by your recommendations? SMH.
Look up GM 6.2L engine failures & you will find that over 17,000 engines have had to be replaced due to failures, all 6.2L engines from 2021-24 (L87 engines) are involved. Here's the short of it, too rough of surfaces on crank caused particles to get shaved off as engines broke in, these metal shavings damaged the internal bearing surfaces & engine failure. Additionally & the too thin 20wt oil couldn't provide enough oil film to cushion the rough spots & debris. Metal grinds on metal, heat builds up & the bearing welds itself to the crank. Worse case the rod snaps & punches a hole in the side of the block. Over 600,000 vehicles were involved in the initial recall but it's not over yet.
Now if your engine was still running & checked out ok the dealership was instructed to change the vehicle oil from 0W-20 to 0W-40. There are sound scientific reasons for this which is why GM engineers have made this a mandatory oil change going forward in those vehicles. For details check out "the motor oil geek" on YouTube. He is a Tribologist & developed Joe Gibbs racing oils in early 2000's & covers the issue on GM's engine failure in detail.
Can you run your car 200k or more on 20wt oil, perhaps & I've done that. However, my study of one means nothing and like a heart attack patient one doesn't know what is happening to the inside of their engine until a major failure occurs or oil useage increases to high levels. CAFE Standards which manufactures need to meet or face penalties, is the reason for thinner oil in the exact same vehicle in the United States vs other parts of the world. You can Google & find this information.
So yes after reviewing the data & learning way more than I need to about oil, I would say it's in your benefit to not just take the manufacturer's oil weight recommendation as gospel but look at the data & make an educated decision. After all when the warranty is up the dime is out of your pocket not theirs.
PS: "the motor oil geek" also has rational as to why a top tier gas, usually the higher octane gas benefits your engine & could prevent issues, especially in direct injection engines.
