Crucially, most brand names buy from multiple ODMs. So the brand name of the laptop can't really tell you the build quality. A Lenovo model may have more in common with an HP model made by the same ODM, than to another Lenovo model made by a different ODM. Even Apple's much-vaunted quality is mostly a marketing illusion. The Macbooks are made by Quanta, and Quanta makes laptops for pretty much all the other brand names. (Quanta is widely considered one of the better if not the best quality laptop ODM.)
The entire industry is very secretive about this. And it's very difficult to figure out which ODM made which model. The brand names specifically request the ODMs not leave any identifiable markings.
What you do get from the brand name is aftermarket support. I usually stick with Lenovo / Thinkpads because they seem to have a decent network of authorized repair centers. The one nearest to me is good about flexibility. So if I have a problem with the laptop that's covered under warranty, I take it to them. They diagnose the problem and order the part, and give me back the laptop. They call me when the part gets in. I take it there, and they replace the part while I go grab lunch or something. And I usually get it back the same day. The only real headache has been that sometimes it can take months for the part to come in. But at least I still get to use the laptop during that time, instead of it sitting on some shelf at the manufacturer's repair facility while I'm stuck without a laptop for months (which has happened with a previous gaming laptop I owned - Gigabyte if you're curious, and their repair facility was local to me but they insisted I had to leave the laptop with them while we waited for parts).
(Asus specifically started off as an ODM. Then they began selling their own line of laptops, which made their brand name customers rather upset. So they spun off their ODM business as Pegatron, and Asus continued as a laptop brand. If you're curious about the name, the CEO/owner has a thing for pegasus.)
