This worth it for getting son into the hobby? Seems decent. "Brushless ready" transmission --any sense of expense upgrading it? I guess it would need new ESC and 3000-ish kv motor... so fragmented, hard to estimate.

If you're buying this for your son... no real need to get a brushless setup. The brushed motor is plenty fast for a beginner

Sure but I would buy two and potentially upgrade mine and his eventually. Looks like there are low cost avenues--wouldn't be exactly a 223s with DSC etc but still plenty fast

Are you looking to bash? I have a few cars with 2200kv and a couple with 2600kv motors in them. When I want to just drive i use a 3s battery but when it's time to drag race or speed run i used 4s/6s batteries. I use castle and poseidon. I have done friends that go deep into the rabbit hole with some real custom motors.

Pretty much bash. We have a couple skate parks around here and general parks and roads to mess around. No real racing
It would have been a slickdeal if the battery and charger was included.
A tall order for hobby grade cars, and tariffs screwed up everything so they went from expensive to totally absurd. The Typhon 3S was $329 (no battery or charger of course) and it's now $370 full price. A Kraton 4S was $430 two years ago, it's now almost $600.

I got into hobby RC cars and while people are some of the coolest, very helpful and chill, the level of greed coming from manufacturers is unbelievable.
Arrma for instance uses proprietary batteries and chargers, not compatible with anything. Prices are super high without battery. Batteries are proprietary so they are expensive. Same with spektrum charger , expensive. I finally folded and bought a spektrum charger. Parts are ridiculous, a Mohave Grom I have had a few broken pieces after a day of play, cost $78 for a few tiny parts and even after replacing it doesn't go straight so water $250 on a truck and $78 on parts. And now it's useless.
Then I got frustrated , left thebasher world I got into Mini z and that's another level of greed. A kit that cost $40 sells for $500+ and it's still missing all kinds of stuff to add. It's like a never ending cycle of buy buy buy and you are still missing 15 other things for a simple run..RTR in rc world means sht. Means you need 50 other this to buy.and at that point you are playing with a useless toy grade and others have pro grade cars costing $1000+
Really sick industry.
But I have met the most generous and coolest people in RC world they are so awesome and so giving. Gave me so many parts and pieces, helped solder my stuff etc.

Youn don't need to buy the spektrum batteries or charger. IC5 is compatible with EC5. You don't get the smart aspect with EC5 but I personally think the IC5 connections are overrated. Do Arrma gear can be used with non-proprietary gear. Traxxas connectors are the ones that are truly proprietary.

Mini-z doesn't cost $40. Rtr Mini-Z kits are about $160 (just add rechargeable AAA batteries, and transponder for a local track)
This is a pretty good deal. My Senton 223S was about twice this (not including batteries and charge but that was a brushless 1:10 and has a significantly different design (shell covers the tyres and includes a built in roll cage).
I would buy this over a $100 Amazon kit. 1:8 is big, fun, and arrmas are plenty serviceable.
Tempted to pick this up myself but I don't neeeeeeeeeed it...
