Walmart's cheap stupid every day $6 press isn't bad. The garlic doesn't care and I use it for a whole five seconds before throwing it into the sink and then back into the drawer.

If you're a heavy duty garlic user the regular dept store garlic press isnt good enough as they usually break at the hinges after a year or so. This garlic press gets the job done but at a disadvantage: Its hard to clean, its small and its not something you want to bust out all the time due to these issues.

I'd probably shell out for the fancier one, if only because that red cleaner on the back makes it much easier to clean the press. If you don't clean it immediately and the garlic remains harden, they can be a real pain in the butt to scrub off.

With that said, my preferred method of grating garlic these days is on the Microplane:

We have this one and like it. We broke a lower quality Oxo and they replaced it immediately. This press can be a little annoying because the tolerance between the crusher and the grill is big, so it can squeeze out the sides. It's also tricky to clean inside the hollow triangle of the crusher.

However, the thing can crush garlic all day and it's easy to crush through garlic husks if you leave some on. I would buy this again if it ever failed (and Oxo didn't replace it).
