You absolutely can split these up as each is a standalone router. All 3 are identical.

They come pre-paired and two units are already preset to work as mesh units. However if its anything like the previous Zen models you can factory reset the mesh units and use them as standalone routers.

The problem with this router is that its WAN port is the only 2.5G port, whereas all other ports are 1G.
Its wired backhaul is also limited to 1G and does not support advanced VLAN.
If you aim to leverage all Wi-Fi 7 features, this router is not it. It can provide Wi-Fi 7 support, but with a bottleneck.
Other than these, the router is a decent upgrade if you are stuck in really outdated hardware.

Anyone have recommendations for a set up since I need an upgrade for my 1 Gig upgrade ? My routers are super old. I need a new set up where the main router must be in the garage since that's where the comcast cable at along with ethernets main hub for the house. AP is upstairs, you think this unit is the best ?

I agree 100%! If someone has internet service greater than 1GB I recommend they upgrade to the BT8. That gets them two 2.5GB ports (and two 1GB ports), total of 4 ports on each router and the mesh node(s). If someone needs to connect more than two 2.5GB devices to a BT8 node they will need a 2.5GB switch. But at least it will let you fully take advantage of internet speeds up to 2.5GB.

Unclear from your post if you will be upgrading to 1gig or if you are moving from 1gig to faster speed. I think the BT6 is OK up to 1 gig, but the BT8 set is better as it'll support internet speeds up to 2.5GB.

Thanks for the clarification. If my house roughly 1800 sq ft between upstairs/downstairs. I assume I need 1 main, 2 mesh to cover the area. Yes I have 1 gig speed internet from comcast and wanted to take advantage of it. Currently running ac1900

Asus has major problems with this product. Their tech support line has a recording saying that they have known connectivity problems because of a firmware glitch. Well after spending an hour on the phone, I have the new firmware and did get internet connection now but it is causing buffering and hangs continually on live TV streaming. Never a problem before this equipment was installed. They have more problems than I want to deal with. Also, their internet speed test is showing that I am getting 500Mbps. Ookla Speed test consistently shows 200-300Mbps. This is at least a two fold increase in internet speed from what I was getting with my old router but the connection is not consistent at all. So just because there is a huge download increase in speed, this router and node cannot stream live TV as well as my old router which has WiFi 4 (802.11n).

Which mesh is better? Any drawback with the OneMesh from TP-Link? I heard that it is slow to connect to the near router when the device move from place to place.

Yes, you'd need at least two units. A router and a mesh. But based on what MaroonCabbage737 mentioned you might want to skip this set as ASUS seems to have issues with WiFi 7 mesh at the moment. May take time for them to get the firmware bugs fixed.

Thanks for the note and sharing your experience. Based on this folks may want to consider ASUS's WiFi 6 or WiFi 6E mesh products instead. They are more stable.

Based on what MaroonCabbage737 shared you could consider ASUS WiFi 6/6E mesh products instead. If you must have WiFi 7, you could try Netgear or TP-Link.
