Compared to the $299 iPad Air M1 256GB deal from Walmart last month, is this as good a deal? Seems like you're paying quite a premium for size.
Tough comparison between the M1 and A17 Pro chip I would say. The WM deal was for double the storage which may be important to some. But the size of the mini is important for those that prefer it - say drop it in a purse for example. Apple would make a killing if they had a mini version of their regular iPad.
And that was the deal then potentially. This is the deal now..
Can anyone confirm if the battery life is very poor on these as many reviews claim ?
I've had this iPad mini since it came out. I can confirm the battery life is pretty bad. I usually use it for YouTube, Netflix, and some occasional gaming and the battery just tanks. I generally have to charge it once a day.
I also have 2 iPad A16 models and they have a much better runtime and standby time.
I remember when Apple started soldering the memory in airs, they said it will reduce the over all cost. Liars
They weren't lying. It did lower costs.... their cost. And it increased "their" profits while keeping the same price or raising it. And still people keep on buying their products. ๐

FWIW, I have lots of Apple products but not a single one was bought at retail price, and many were purchased as open-box or highly discounts to help offset the upgrade extortion prices Apple charges.

That was sort of the point of my post -- is this really a deal now? Apple charged less for an iPhone 13 mini over a regular iPhone 13, but charges more for an iPad mini or a larger iPad. An 8" tablet is not rocket science.

It's interesting that you say an 8 inch tablet is not rocket science, but the competitors are terrible in comparison. In general competitors are bad, but then when you compare it to using an iPad as a professional tool for art or design or music, they REALLY don't rate well in comparison.
If it was that easy to make a good tablet, where are all the competitors? Is a Tab cheaper?

Regardless of it being overpriced or not, it is a deal. MSRP is $499. Recently dropped to $399 by the major retailers. Best Buy today drops another $50.
Compared it to Apple's Cyber Monday deal of a $50 GC with purchase, yeah this is a good deal.

You've certainly taken my point about price vs size and made a stew out of it. Not here to argue about competition or whether "professionals" use anything other than an iPad or any of your other points. The fact that in a device the size of an iPhone 16 Pro Max you can fit a super-computer proves that making an 8" mini tablet with less performance isn't rocket science.
