These AirPods Pro 3 open box units are drawing attention for strong value, especially when promo codes or Venmo checkout drop the price well below retail. The main appeal is that many pairs appear to be genuine, with Apple serial checks, working features, and in several cases AppleCare plus coverage running into 2028. Cosmetic wear is common, though, with beat up boxes, micro scratches, and occasional signs of prior use. The biggest caution is authenticity and Find My behavior, since some pairs need resets or purchase date updates while others are returned as mismatches or fakes, making this a higher risk open box buy.
Apple device owners who want active noise cancellation and spatial audio, because the earbuds work properly once paired and can sound better than the previous generation.
Buyers who want zero authenticity risk, because several reports describe fake or mismatched units and Find My can behave inconsistently on problem pairs.
People who need a plug-and-play setup, because some pairs require resets, re-pairing, or purchase-date updates before Find My and warranty status work correctly.
Shoppers relying on a specific warranty outcome, because coverage can vary between standard warranty and AppleCare+ depending on the unit and purchase date.
The units can be legitimate Apple AirPods Pro 3, but the coverage is inconsistent: some arrive with AppleCare+ already attached through early 2028, while others show only an Allstate warranty or an unvalidated purchase date. Checking the serial numbers in Apple's support app and updating the purchase date can reveal whether AppleCare+ is active.
A real pair should pass Apple serial checks, show up correctly in Find My, register in Settings, and support normal features like play sound, firmware updates, and the Apple Music trial. Red flags include AirPods Mismatch, setup incomplete, missing Find Nearby, or Find My behavior that keeps breaking after resets.
Yes. Installing the Apple Support app and updating the purchase date in My Devices can make AppleCare+ recalculate, with reported extensions to dates like March 2028 or January 2028. This is useful when Apple initially says it cannot validate the purchase date.
Expect used/open-box signs such as a beat-up or torn box, micro-scratches on the case, small ear tips already installed, and sometimes dirt or earwax. Some units arrive looking nearly pristine inside, but cosmetic wear is common enough that cleaning them before use is practical.
The issue can come from pairing glitches, and some units start working after a reset, re-pairing, or a full Find My/Bluetooth reset sequence. If the problem keeps returning after troubleshooting, it may indicate a defective or fake unit rather than a normal setup issue.
Took a chance--they're fake and will be returning. They don't show up properly in Find My and say AirPods Mismatch. Serial numbers and warranty don't mean anything.
In the Find My app. Initially, I got it to show the location of the AirPods. However, the Play Sound wasn't working properly and it showed "Directions" instead of "Find Nearby".
Now they cannot be found and say setup incomplete and mismatch. After resetting, it worked for a few mins, and back to cannot be found. Apparently Find My being wonky is one big indicator that they're fake.
Mine also had the supposed extended warranty and the serial checked out. Like I said, those don't matter.
i have mine sitting beside the ones i bought directly from apple they are 100% real. mine from apple even were wonky with find my for about an hour when i bought them back in october. Find my works perfectly once setup with the app plays sound, does all features is on the proper firmware. Be skeptical all you want and maybe yours was a fraud thing were someone done the switcheroo on return but the ones i received are legit.
All features work perfectly bought two pair off this deal and same results with both pair. Hell of a deal.

I'm happy all these posts are coming in. I tried letting people know they're legit while the deal was live.

You just need to reset the Airpods. I had the same issue but now fixed by just resetting it.

I am having the same problem. I wonder if it is because the case and AirPods are mismatched. I also wonder whether the case might be a knockoff and the AirPods are real... will be returning mine, thanks for helping troubleshoot it!

Just a heads up, the serial number on an AirPods charging case is completely different than the serial numbers on the individual AirPods. I thought the same and then looked at my older generations and googled it
I'll add my data point. My came in obviously used (small ear tips installed), several micro scuffs on the polycarbonate case. Works perfectly, no issues with Find My - firmware checks out. Applecare until January 2028. Case serial matches that of the box and what is reported by IOS from the buds. Good enough for me.
My APP 3 came in yesterday, box was torn and the case/pods had some signs of use. I cleaned them then thoroughly tested by using all the features, had some trouble getting Find My to work but I found a solution in a reddit thread where a lot of people had similar issues. Got Find My to work but the case wasn't showing up until I reset the APP 3 pairing and could finally make the Find My sound work and charging case sound work properly. I checked the date purchased (October) and saw they were covered until the end of January 2028.

Thank you that's helpful. What steps did you take (or maybe share the Reddit post)? Did you have to reset your iPhone?

Ok copypasting the comment that helped
"First, I had to update to IOS26
1.) Removed them from Find My (in the app)
2.) I disconnected them in bluetooth.
3.) Forget them in bluetooth
4.) Turned off Theft Protection
5.) Turned off Find My
6.) Reset phone
7.) Turned on Find My
8.) Reset phone
9.) Re-pair.
This is what worked for me. The issues I was having was:
1.) Case not showing in My Find
2.) Find sound playing only on the pods and they would ring inside the case! Craziness.
3.) Other Find My glitches. Like My AirPod Max were showing as Bluetooth device"

Still having trouble, when you say reset iPhone, do you mean complete reset with erasing content?
