New to Apple and gift cards.... We need to eventually buy a Macbook for school. I have ~$600 in my Discover cashback balance. Can I buy ~$600 worth of $25 Apple ecertificates, and then use all of those ecertificates to cover part of the Macbook purchase? Will Apple allow this payment online or do I have to perform this in-store? Or, is it better to just buy the Macbook via Costco?

I think there's a transaction limit of 8 gift cards or something. But there may be a way around that by adding the cards to your balance (separate balance limit of 2k or something)

You can use Apple gift cards online or in store. Only limitation I am aware of is 8 gift cards max in 1 transaction. But if you load cards to your accounts balance, there are more limitations.

There is still a 8 limit gc max in 1 transaction even if you load cards to your account balance. Don't ever expect to use more than 8 gcs for a single purchase even when you combine with your account balance, which is limited to $2000 btw.

There are some differences between buying a Macook at Apple and at Costco that you should consider.
Apple will offer more configuration options, while Costco will only have the standard ones
Apple's price will always standard, Costco might be $50 to $100 cheaper. However Apple offers education pricing which might make it the same as Costco.
They deleted redemption history prior to 2024. All my unused gift cards are gone. Worked with support but no luck. I will never get gift card from discover

I think it's almost always better to buy MacBooks from Best Buy / Costco when they are on discount. The exception would be you want to customize the laptop precisely to your liking. I would use the gift card for iPhones (if you buy unsubsidized) or use it for AppleCare / AppStore

I bought $1000+ worth of apple GC in 2022 and loaded them up in my itunes/apple account and used the balance to buy an iPhone 15 in 2023 without issue.

I bought MacBook Air + Watch SE3 at BestBuy and used the PayPal $1250 20% cashback deal.
Apple is at MSRP if buying directly. They bundle it with their $250 Gift Card for laptops for this holiday season, but BestBuy, Costco and Amazon have already been selling MacBook Air at $950 for M4 Air 13 512GB/16GB variant, when Apple continues to sell at $1,200 with $250 GC.
You can use your Discover points at Amazon and several other places.
