About this Book:
  • You know what's worse than breaking up with your girlfriend? Being stuck with her prize-winning show cat. And you know what's worse than that? An alien invasion, the destruction of all man-made structures on Earth, and the systematic exploitation of all the survivors for a sadistic intergalactic game show. That's what.
  • Join Coast Guard vet Carl and his ex-girlfriend's cat, Princess Donut, as they try to survive the end of the world—or just get to the next level—in a video game–like, trap-filled fantasy dungeon. A dungeon that's actually the set of a reality television show with countless viewers across the galaxy. Exploding goblins. Magical potions. Deadly, drug-dealing llamas. This ain't your ordinary game show.

If you do kindle unlimited (maybe do the trial), the ebooks are free and part of the service. Once you have the book, audible will then only charge you between $2-7 for each of the audio books.

When the trial ends you'll lose the ebooks but you'll keep the audiobooks

Amazing book, but the audiobooks are far superior.

I may buy it just for the collecting.

Agreed! The series is second to none in the genre. And the audiobooks take it to another level! I don't have any of the physical books, but I'm tempted because I've never seen a DCC deal on SD.

Can not recommend this series enough! First read it on Kindle, then listened through Audible and have the hard backs listed here.

Truly? The card stuff is awful. Then it's a resource management game in the latest book. I just found it painful.
That's book six. Seven is the level 9's Faction Wars. And I love everything about it. In fact, I was just rereading part of it earlier today.

If you visit the DCC subreddit, you'll learn that some characters from book six are WILDLY popular.

We read all the books first. Coincidentally, we just started the audiobooks during a long Thanksgiving drive home. They are every bit as great as advertised. That voice actor is a star.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Book 6 was the uninteresting card game, and Book 7 was resource management or something. Sending people here and there. No soul in either book.

FWIW, McDonald's is wildly popular too.

As one not familiar with this series (or genre), I'm confused. What does it mean for the book to be an "uninteresting card game" or "resource management game"? TIA

Each level of the dungeon has a different set up. It's better the less you know going in. The chaotic nature of the series is one of the things that is so fun about it.

Books 5 and 7 are my favorite of the series. Lots of great world building in both.

Like everyone said, the audiobooks take things to another level. I recommend going in blind and listening. It's what I did over a year ago and I've now gone through each book multiple times.

OK, you guys have sold me on the audiobooks, but I'm going to treat them like I treat movie adaptations. Books first, then I'll listen to the audiobooks! I really like to imagine every aspect of a book before watching, or in this case listening to anything. Because imagining the characters voices is all part of it. Seeing how the imagery my brain paints compares to screen adaptations is part of the fun.

The books I'd say are worth owning though whether someone was going to read them or not. As others have said, bonus material at the end and they're just beautiful books in general. Great art on the dust covers.

Litrpg is a genre where characters live in role-playing game systems. The genre sometimes then splits out into similar gaming systems, like card games (Magic the Gathering) and resource management strategy games (Civilization or Command and Conquer). There are entire series of novels that are similar to watching somebody sitting and playing Civilization, but in the novel, the characters are fighting actual battles and wars through their decisions. In the case of DCC, the 5th or 6th novel adds some card elements that just feel tacked on and pointless, and the seventh feels like a character managing a war video game. I feel like the 6th novel on lose all the crazy momentum of the previous novels, but to each their own.

The first three books are excellent, the best in the genre and a lot of fun for anybody who enjoys silly humor. The next two go downhill but are still a lot of fun. Then it's a mess.

I just have to say, Jeff Hays (audiobook narrator) will spoil you. It's extremely difficult going to regular audiobooks after his performance. It's on par with a full cast production.

I really hope there will be an anime adaptation with Mappa or Madhouse at the helm.

I picked up the book just to have lol

I resisted for so long, but I finally caved and read DCC. It's so good. I ended up addicted to the genre. That said, the series is strong for the first four books or so and then heads downhill. The newest book is, to me, unreadable. I'm tempted to get a copy, but man... just another thing sitting on the shelf.
Disagree. Writing matures at book 5

Right. The story doesn't even get warmed up until midway through book three. From book four on, it's an incredible ride.

Only have the audiobooks but was pleasantly surprised others have found this series. The only bad thing about this series is that it must come to an end. Don't fret, if you enjoyed this jump on over to Expeditionary Force. Same type of humor. Anybody have any other suggestions? Always need more of this style has been very enjoyable.
