So, yeah, for what it is, $330 was a good deal for what is ultimately a dead-end range, but if it's likely to become more of a hobby, anything from the "R" line-up would be a better long term option at this point.
And I say this as someone with a sizeable investment in EF/EF-S lenses...
Total noob, but I'm going on a solo trip and it reminded me how I've never taken great photos and having a camera that is better than my iPhone or the old school point-and-shoot digital cameras from 15+ years ago has been a goal of mine for a long time.

If you do decide to go down the mirrorless path, I'd look at the Sony Alpha line, or the Panasonic Lumix line. Both have wide availability of third-party (meaning cheaper) lenses. Each line has its own high-end and low-end, so you can spend what you want.
