You can get FREE public domain audio books at https://librivox.org/ The have the entire Oz series and some with multiple versions.
Libribox has volunteer readers I think, so Audible version maybe better quality.

As an aside, some narrators are so great they have their own fan base. If I start a book series that I like, and the narrator is good, I cannot imagine switching narrators and can't imagine the character sounding any other way than how they portray it. I don't notice the narrator anymore almost. they enrich the book, they add it another dimension.
I have listened to over 400 books via Audible. I can tell you for me, there's a definite difference between these public domain "classics" readers and the seasoned professional narrators. The voice artists who can make even a mediocre story entertaining. Gerard Doyle, Julia Whelan, Steve Carlson, Wil Wheaton, Angela Dawe, Luke Daniels… these and several others are A list narrators and their performances are so superior compared to the amateurs it's apples and oranges.
Pro tip: preview an audiobook BEFORE you buy, not after you've already plunked down your dosh. 😉
So my first question is "Will I enjoy this story?" Then "Does this narrator draw me deeper into the story, do a good job separating different characters by using accents or different voices, pause in the right places, sell the excitement / disappointment / sadness / fear / etc they're trying to convey as written by the author, and so on.
Eventually you become familiar with the various narrators and can rule out a audiobook just because it's narrated by Bronson Pinchot or RC Bray or Katherine Kellgren (why you always gotta be scolding me, Katie?). Likewise, there are narrators who I know right out of the box will make any story entertaining. But this all comes from experiencing the narrations and learning who uses a style you appreciate.
So to reiterate: Story first, then listen to the sample and if both of those yields a "Ya, I think I can enjoy this." that's when you hit that Buy button.
But to your original point, there's an Audible narrator Hall of Fame, but like the Emmys and Oscars and Golden Globes, just because it's award worthy doesn't mean YOU are gonna like it.
