Is this worth the $120 premium over the version with the X Plus processor?

I think everyone should stay away from any 16GB Win laptops. With all sorts of services running (existing and new apps), that 16GB will be maxed out quick. Probably why we are seeing so many 16GB ram deals.

for the 13.8, generally not, supposedly the elite throttles in the smaller chassis

No, it doesn't at all. Source your information when you make such claims.
Snapdragon chips are among the most efficient chips, providing great battery life, thermals, and less to no fan noise.

He must have been reading the stuff that user ruinedx has been posting, saying that elite processors are slower because of throttling is BS.

I read the same thing in various reddit forums, i.e. if you want to fully benefit from the Elite version of the Snapdragon, buy the 15" version of the Surface laptop. I have the X plus variant and no generally for my use no performance issues. Some non native ARM application drain the battery pretty quick though and the keyboard heats up. As I am mostly use office and chrome on this, it's not really an issue for me. I use a desktop PC with x86 for the more demanding stuff.

No, as long as you mean the 10 core plus. The elite throttles in the 13.8" and gets worse battery life

Here is evidence that the X elite throttles in the 13.8" and gets worse battery life. Let's see your proof it doesn't

My proof is that I own and use them both. The Elite is faster. Stop posting that silly link.

Ok, so you have no proof, thanks.

As a bonus question, if you actually believe the 13.8" Surface Laptop 7 Snapdragon X Elite isn't throttled, explain logically why using exactly the same processor in the 15" Surface Laptop 7 yields radically better performance.

Hint: Microsoft capped the Snapdragon X elite to 20W in the 13.8" vs 30W in the 15", a 33% throttling of power. Can you guess what the cap of the X plus is in the 13.8"? That's right, the X Plus is capped at the same 20W as the X Elite in the 13.8"!

This is correct. As a double whammy with the Surface Laptop 7 13.8" specifically, unlike the Surface Pro 13", the X Elite version of the Surface Laptop 7 13.8" does not have a larger battery than the X Plus 13.8". So on top of getting no better performance in tasks that actually strain the CPU, you get worse battery life as the Elite eats about 15% more battery for light tasks due to having to power the extra cores.

The only surface device worth paying more for the X Elite is the 15" laptop. All of the rest, its a waste as they lack the thermal headroom, though with the Surface Pro 13 at least you get an OLED screen bundled for the extra cost.

These are Snapdragon based laptops. They're not as RAM hungry as regular laptops.

I'd stay away from them for other reasons Smilie
